Piano Maintenance Tips

Here are some maintenance tips that will keep your piano in a good shape for the long run:
Keep your piano tuned
Tuning is actually correcting the sounding of the piano by adjusting the tensions of its strings. The piano is designed to sound its best when tuned to the international pitch standard of A-440 cycles per second. You should bear in mind that the piano goes out of tune whether it's used or not and it is preferably to tune the piano at least once a year.
Do not try to tune the piano by yourself
Tuning your piano should always be done by an expert. It requires the right tools, parts and expertise so you better leave it to the professionals. Any attempt to fix it yourself can be costly.
Maintain the proper humidity and temperature around your piano
The piano is sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature because it is made primarily from wood. Changes in humidity and temperature can cause your piano to sound out of tuned. In warm and humid weather the strings and moving parts will expand, causing the pitch to rise while in cool and dry weather they will contract, causing the pitch to fall. Therefore, you better keep your piano away from fireplaces, radiators, air-conditions and direct sunlight. In addition, it is advisable to keep the piano next to an inner wall so it will be less exposed to changes of temperature and humidity. The idle temperature is between 68 - 72 F (20- 22 C) and the idle humidity levels are between 40 to 45.
Keep your piano clean
Clean the keyboard and all finishes with a soft, dry cloth. In cases of dirty areas, use a cloth dipped in a solution of soap but don't forget to dry the area thoroughly afterwards. Don't use cleansing fluids as the silicone and oils in them can damage the wood.
No drinks in the vicinity of the Piano
Keep vases, drinks, and any kind of liquid away from your piano. Once a liquid is spilled into the mechanism of the piano it can cause major damage.
Avoid moving the piano by yourself
Since the piano is a very heavy and fragile instrument, moving the piano requires safety measures. Therefore, you better use a professional piano mover to move your piano, unless you really want to break your back while damaging your valuable instrument.
