The Best Acoustic Guitar Possible - Could The Choice To Purchase One Be A Good Move?

It could be down to cost, it could be down to volume or it could just be down to lack of understanding, but a question on scores of guitar buying folks' mind might be if the idea to get cheap acoustic guitars for starters to learn with serves as a suitable move. On the face of it, it might seem just like the most obvious axe to study on as it is often the guitar most often seen made use of by kids in schools, enjoying a common standard in unison to happy mothers and fathers.
Consequently is there such a type of product as the best acoustic guitar for beginners? There are particular factors regarding learning when using acoustic guitar. The initial being the fact that the guitar strings themselves can be relatively thick and the bass strings ( the very thickest 3) happen to be really heavy. The young guitar player will definitely sense some soreness to begin with just after lengthy playing as his or her tips of the fingers are sensitive and haven't established the essential calluses. The next point might be that the hands and fingers may well be pretty weak given that they haven't yet got accustomed to holding guitar strings down. Additionally, they are extremely unlikely to have evolved the desired dexterity which the more practiced guitar players have got. All looking more involved as compared to what you first of all assumed? Well, picking out that initial six string is utterly key for the permanence, enjoyment and continuance of playing.
Learning on an acoustic guitar is clearly possible and many people do it, but I would most likely propose that it principally is dependent upon the kind of acoustic guitar bought. Starting to learn on a mid to high-end acoustic guitar having a good action will mean that the newbie guitarist will not only be capable of create chord shapes around the first three frets, but additionally have the ability to barre chord (place their finger over all six guitar strings and build guitar chord structures on the dustier part of the fret board.
The acoustic six string that has a higher action may very well be grown away from due to the fact guitar player gets very much better and looks to add to the guitar chord and also musical note repertoires available. At this juncture in the starting players evolution an exciting new axe will be demanded and that may just be an electric or possibly electro-acoustic instrument. With an electric guitar the action is typically lower and the guitar strings are thinner. The guitar player really does still require those calluses however.

The Collins Kids (Lorrie and Larry) Combined Charm With Energy To Turn Out Great Rockabilly

Lorrie and Larry Collins were a phenomenon in the 1950s. This brother and sister duo, who called themselves The Collins Kids, were mere children when they started performing country music. Lorrie had an amazing voice as well as beauty and charm, while Larry who was two years younger was already a guitar wizard by the age of 10. When they switched from strictly country to incorporating rockabilly in 1954, Larry was just 12 and Lorrie 14. But their tender young ages didn't stop them from making rockabilly history.
Because they were so young, the duo's music was initially geared toward children. But Lorrie was such a compelling singer and Larry such an exuberant performer that they crossed generational boundaries and held unexpected appeal to older listeners even more so than younger.
Larry, who had been schooled in country guitar by his mentor Joe Maphis, was a bundle of energy who hopped, skipped, and jumped around the stage while never missing a lick on his unusual double-necked Mosrite guitar (which was a smaller version of the guitar Maphis played). Larry and Maphis would often appear together when Maphis would reach around Larry's back and play one neck of the guitar as Larry played the other. The two would trade solos and often trade which neck they were playing. For the mid 50s it was quite a show!
As Lorrie matured, she became quite beautiful which certainly helped the duo's popularity (in fact, she became teen idol Ricky Nelson's first real girlfriend and appeared in a dual role on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in which she played twin sisters), but she was much, much more than just a pretty face. Her singing was every bit as lovely as her face and with Larry chiming in on harmony vocals, they were lots of fun to watch and listen to.
"Hopping, skipping, and jumping" is an apt description of Larry's stage antics, and the phrase became the title to one of their most-loved rockabilly songs, "Hop, Skip, and Jump." The duo also became regulars on the Town Hall Party country music show and there is a lot of great archival video of their performances.
The Collins Kids continued to perform well into the 60s when they adopted a more folk/rock/British Invasion look. Later, Larry continued on in the music business as a successful song writer and found success with two Grammy-nominated hits, "Delta Dawn" and "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma."
In the early 90s the two reunited and began performing once again under the name The Collins Kids and have been an energetic part of the revival scene since then.

Why Many Teenagers Struggle to Read Music and What You Can Do About It

Just this past week I had an inquiry from a mother with a 16-year old daughter. Will my program help her daughter to read?
I inquired more about her daughter, her level of competence. I needed a "picture" of the student. The picture: student has been learning for 8 years, is playing two pieces, one of which is a simplified version of a piece that is not written for piano, and the other some little "fluff" piece of dubious music value. Certainly, you will never hear it in the concert hall. Why not? It's not interesting enough for the audience to listen to.
My Summary: Student is playing well below not only her age level but also well below the skills of someone learning for 8 years. Unfortunately, this is true too many times. It's the result of a teacher -- or in this case, more than one teacher -- who does not know how to advance students quickly.
And the outcome is student boredom.
It could also be the outcome of mixing music "patterns" too much in the younger grades. Some students work better in the early years when they see regular patterns. Example: A piano piece most of my students learn around the end of their first year is Burgmuller's Op. 100, No. 15 ("Ballade"). Not only is it a great character study, but it has repeated patterns, especially in the right hand. All students, in my opinion, need to learn pieces such as this which are lively, regular, and fun to play. This makes reading easy, learning is fast, and so motivation is high.
Now, how can our 16-year old be fixed? So many times, it cannot be fixed, since the student has already reached an age where she's ready to quit. "Why learn now?", she is thinking subconsciously. The learning process is more challenging because teenage students don't want to play music that sounds great for an eight-year old but boring and "simple" to a teenager. You have to find pieces that are relatively simple, regular, and appeal to more mature students.
It takes a highly motivated teenager to overcome issues such as this. Without that, parents probably should cancel lessons, save their money, and spend it on something more valuable to their child's education.
But if the teenager is motivated enough, here's a simple solution:
  • Student needs new music every week, length depending on complexity, but see next point.
  • Student needs to be able to decipher the notes on the page, so it cannot be too complex.
  • Student needs to be able to play the notes as they are being read.
  • Student needs great sounding pieces, regular patterns.
  • This should not take more than about 15 minutes a day
  • Student should have the goal of playing the music from memory as quickly as possible.
  • Where possible, use more than one piece of music, so there is variety in the student's learning. Two shorter pieces is better than one longer one.

Rockabilly Music Rubbed the Establishment The Wrong Way

Perhaps it's an age-old truth that the older generation doesn't understand the music of the youth. I don't know whether the kids of Mozart's age caught the same kind of flak from their parents for listening to his music, but there's no doubt that rockabilly and early rock and roll music stirred up a hornet's nest of parental disapproval among the parents of the 1950s! And rockabilly artists were particularly despised because of their rebel attitude and appearance.
No one quite knew what to make of Elvis in 1954 after the release of his first few Sun Records sides, starting with "That's All Right" backed by a hepped-up version of Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky." They didn't know where to put this kid because he was a little bit of a lot of things. They tried to stick him into the country category and indeed he soon started racking up the hits on the country charts.
But the country establishment didn't really want him. He did appear on the Grand Ole Opry a time or two, but soon was banned from performing there again because his salacious moves and raw sensuality offended the powers that be in country music. They were happy to ride his hit-making machine in order to share in the profits; they just didn't want to be seen with him!
Perhaps they thought about calling him rhythm and blues since he was also pulling from the R&B catalog for songs like "Mystery Train" and "Hound Dog" and had a very R&B performance attitude. And in fact, Elvis also saw unprecedented success on the R&B charts. But there was no getting around it: he was white. And a white boy couldn't really be an R&B performer.
Of course, Elvis was also a smash sensation on the pop charts, which is where he eventually landed. So that was it--Elvis would be a pop star. But the adults were not much more excited to see him there than anywhere else. Those kinds of moves, that "raunchy" attitude, well that was pretty much what "decent" white folks from the racist America of the 1950s could expect from those "race musicians" who were singing that "awful" R&B music. But it was totally improper behavior for any respectable white boy. And completely out of the question for white teenaged fans.
Of course, all of these narrow-minded attitudes only fueled the rockabilly flame. Soon it wasn't just Elvis who was crossing these barriers of music and manners. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Sleepy LaBeef, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, and so many others kept pushing the boundaries and taking the music--and the fans--to new heights of frenzy.
Rock and roll was here to stay. Many people tried to kill it. Others, like Dick Clark, tried to tame it and tone it down with mushy manufactured artists singing much more polite material. The establishment wanted their nice, ordered world of teenagers back. But they couldn't hold the music. They couldn't hold the personalities. And they couldn't hold their kids. And they still can't!

Home Karaoke - Where And When Did It Originate?

Everyone is familiar with Karaoke. It has become a part of our social fabric. It is a popular form of entertainment that can be found at parties, bars, restaurants and in our homes. But for those who do not know, Karaoke is when someone sings along to prerecorded music using a microphone and speakers. A person chooses from a list of songs, usually well-known or from your own personal favorites, and sings along when the machine plays the song without the lead vocals. Two screens are most often used to display lyrics to both the singer and the audience. The lyrics change color or a moving image is used to tell us when the words should be sung. It is a simple invention, but one that provides hours of fun and is enjoyed though out the world.
But where did Karaoke Originate?
While singing along to music that does not have lead vocals has been around for as long as recorded music. It was not until the development of audio and visual devices does Karaoke start to resemble the form we see today. There are two main disputes of who invented Karaoke. The first claim is that karaoke styled machines were invented by a popular Japanese musician, Daisuke Inoue. It is a custom in Japan to provide musical entertainment for your guest at parties or at a dinner. In 1970 Daisuke, a drummer, was asked by his audience to provide a recording of his music so they could sing along at a company sponsored vacation. He soon realized a potential market for this and made a machine that played a song for 100 yen.
Daisuke then leased this machine out to various stores, restaurants, hotel etc. 100 yen in the 1970 was the same price as two lunches, so this was, at first considered an expensive fad. But it soon caught on and became a popular form of entertainment. But Daisuke never issued a patent for his machine. Missing out on becoming one of the richest men in Japan.
The other claim is from a Filipino named Roberto del Rasario. Many Filipino musicians were immigrating to Japan during the late 1960's and early 1970's. They soon began to devise ways to enjoy their music without having to pay out large fees for live musicians. So to cut cost of a live band and generate a larger revenue, a sing-along musical system started to development which they called 'minus-one music'. Which is sing-along music recorded on a cassette tapes. Roberto del Rasario, an inventor, developed the sing along system in 1975 and Rasario did get a patent for his system in the 1980's. And it is him that holds the patent for the device we now call the Karaoke Machine.
Regardless of which claim is true, Karaoke began to spread through the world. First to Asia in the 1980's and then to the rest of the world in the 1990's. It has become a popular staple for many nightclubs and bars. And as technology developed, karaoke crept its way into our homes. Becoming a poplar choice of entertainment at parties and family gatherings. Now there are many outlets for all us amateurs to pick up the microphone and belt out our favorite tunes.
