Free Music Editing Software

One of my favorite free music editing software applications is Audacity. It is one of the easiest applications to run and can be installed on Windows, Mac's and Linux.
When I was first introduced to Audacity I didn't think too much about the program. It did have the normal multi-tracks most music editing software programs had, but I didn't realize just how many features it included until I really started to play around with the package.
Editing
If you are familiar with Microsoft Word or Excel then using Audacity doesn't get much simpler to use than them. If you know how to drag and drop in files and edit via cut, copy and paste, then you will have the basics nailed. It translates these features seamlessly which means that any novice would be able to start producing sounds right away.
Importing and Exporting
Once you have completed your music masterpiece you will want to export your creation to a CD or mp3 player so that you can take it to a producer or so your family and friends can listen to it. Audacity comes with the ability to import and export mp3's, wav, aiff and au, which means your music can be played on just about any digital audio device.
Effects
If you have some old audio that has a lot of background noise or maybe hissing, humming or static, then Audacity can remove these annoying sounds. Other effects include a built-in Echo, Phaser and Wah wah. You can also change the pitch of a song without altering the tempo. Try doing that on your grandfathers old turn table.
Recording
Most computers these days come with a microphone jack. Audacity allows you to record from the jack point, which means that you can literally record any audio you plug into the jack point, whether that be a keyboard, an electric guitar, a drum machine or a microphone. Volume levels can be adjusted before, during or after recording as well.
Multi-tracks
Back in the day I had a four channel tape mixer, that cost me $800. Because it only had the capability of recording 4 tracks, I use to record three and then over dub them onto the fourth, which allowed me to use the first three tracks to tape an additional three instruments given me a total of 7 tracks. Needless to say it was a little complicated and time-consuming. Audacity allows you to record up to 16 channels for free.
One of the biggest positives about using a product such as Audacity is that it is free. If you want a free music editing software program to just edit the noise out of a few family movies, or put together audio sounds for a school project then this program with do a nice job. However, if you want to create full songs or complicated beats then you will find it somewhat limiting as you layer each track. At this point you should opt for a paid solution.
For $50 you can get a software program that will allow you to expand your music editing capabilities. You just have to do a search online and you will find them everywhere. I would use Audacity to hone my music making abilities or until it becomes unproductive, then I would consider upgrading to an application with more features.

Chamber Ensembles - Making Them Survive

As a member of an up and coming saxophone quartet at my college, I have learned a lot about collaborating with other musicians. Chamber ensembles differ greatly from large ensembles. In order for a chamber ensemble to be successful, each member needs to understand everything, both on a musical and personal level, about each and every other member. The lifespan of the average chamber ensemble is quite short (usually just a few years). This is for a number of reasons. Most college chamber ensembles split up after the members have graduated, or members move, relocate, and logistically it becomes impossible to maintain the ensemble in its original formation. Others break up because the members do not meld well. Here are a few key points to remember when trying to keep your chamber ensemble on the right track:
1) Respect and Open Communication: In order for a chamber ensemble to succeed, an overall respect for each other's personalities and musical interpretations must be present. Nothing kills off a group of friends and colleagues more than when one or more of the members of said group goes behind the others' backs and talks negatively about them ("She isn't matching our note length on that tenuto!" or "He's playing too loudly again!"). Being able to share those thoughts with that person is essential not only to maintain a healthy relationship with them, but also creates a more effective and coherent ensemble.
2) Setting Goals: One thing that really helps chamber ensembles especially is to have shared goals and to also be aware of what they are. For example, a college chamber ensemble unfortunately does not often survive past the college years. Some students go on to more education, others move far away, and the younger students are left behind while the others graduate. Consider making a list of goals together at the very beginning of the ensemble's creation (and keep updating it every few months or so!). These are the goals for the ensemble and each member needs to give it a stamp of approval.
3) Do things together! Your time spent together doesn't have to be limited to being in a windowless practice room. One thing to remember is that musicians often forget that one's opinion of another, as a person, is much different from their opinion of that person as a musician. The two should not be linked. By doing fun things together (go out to dinner, take a road-trip unrelated to a music tour, etc.), you'll learn so much more about the other members of your ensemble.
4) Have an Exit Strategy: Sounds like a business plan, eh? A chamber ensemble is kind of like a business in that respect. There's nothing worse than being at the end of a business' life and then trying to figure out how to make the break up as cleanly as possible. Who takes charge of certain aspects of the break up (money, clients, etc.)? These are important details that if dealt with when there are no hard feelings will make the split much less painful later. But that's not going to happen anyways, right?
For anyone interested in seeing how one famous string quartet managed to stay together for over 30 years in its original configuration, I highly recommend "Indivisible by Four: A String Quartet in Pursuit of Harmony" by Arnold Steinhardt. It tells the story of the Guarneri String Quartet and all of its ups and downs and how even so they still persevered. It's a great read for everyone who has to work with anyone, not just musicians. It proves that teamwork can go a long way.

There have been many 'new big things' promised in the world of pop and soul, but few really live up to the old classic divas, the ones who used to rule the smoky clubs of New Orleans and used their dusky voice and powerful personalities to create a name for themselves in immortality. There are too many to mention here, but if you are into soul, then you will already have a favourite.
Cast your mind back to the first time that you heard that soul or rock singer who really captured your ear; the needle hit the groove and the band began to play, with the delicate croon of bluesy soul riding over the music beneath. Wouldn't it be great if we had them now, rather than the terrible pop stars that are force fed into our daily diet of music through the radio and TV?
What seems to be lacking in today's music scene are true originals, singers that channel the spirits of their heroines in their singing and songwriting style. However, they are out there; you just have to search for them. If you trawl MySpace and Facebook music pages, then you are sure to stumble upon true talents who are constantly uploading their songs for the world to hear.
There's no doubt that the singers are out there, it just means that you have to look a little harder for them; unfortunately it doesn't require drinking down at the blues bars in New Orleans and waiting for a gorgeous singer to take the stage. Now you have to sit at you computer and wait for the next big thing to come through your stereo speakers...you can still make it fun and imagine that you were there in the heart of it though!
So tonight, or whenever it is that you have a free couple of hours, browse through the internet and see what today's soul divas are up to. You may actually be surprised at what you discover and even find a new favourite for your online record collection. It may not sound as fun as stepping into a smoky bar, but what with the smoking ban, most of the blues bars have lost that character anyway! We can all discover our new favourite singer and then, with enough support, get them to play in our local concert hall to relive the old days!
