Another New Jersey native, Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born in Newark in 1963. It's no wonder she chose music as a career, since her mother is singer Cissy Houston, her cousins are Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick and her godmother is Aretha Franklin.
Whitney first started singing in church where she also learned to play the piano. She also traveled with her mother on her tours when Whitney was in her early teens. On occasion, she would join her mother on stage.
In addition to singing backup on Chaka Khan's hit single, "I'm Every Woman" when she was just fifteen, and which Whitney would also make a hit, she also appeared doing background work on albums by Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls.
Before Whitney's singing career took off, she was a familiar face as a model on the cover of many magazines, including Seventeen, Glamour and Cosmopolitan.

On TV, she appeared, in her early years, on episodes of "Gimme A Break" and "Silver Spoons." She was the fairy godmother in the 1997 version of "Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella."
By the late 1990's, Whitney became a more difficult performer and appeared late for interviews, rehearsals and photo shoots. She even cancelled some concerts. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, she admitted to drug abuse and problems with her husband, singer Bobby Brown, whom Whitney divorced in 2007.

NME
The New Musical Express (or the NME) is a weekly music news magazine in the United Kingdom and is the best known (and oldest) music publication in the UK, which was started March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the 14 November 1952 edition. The magazine was in a regular battle with Melody Maker for readership until Melody Maker was merged into the NME in 2000. Respected journalists like Nick Kent, Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill have previously been on the writing staff.
Q Magazine
Q is a music magazine published monthly. It was founded in 1986 by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth who felt that older music buyers were being ignored. However, the magazine developed into a monthly version of the NME and Melody Maker (in terms of their target audience) and The magazine is renowned for it's reviews section, but the magazine revamped their traditional album review and band interview scheme to become "broader" to include several new sections on travel and film to books and gadgets. This revamp has caused critics to sneer that it has lost it's edge.
Kerrang!
Kerrang! is a rock music magazine, founded in 1981, aimed at the Rock/Metal end of the market, which is now published by Bauer Consumer Media. The magazine's unusual name is actually an onomatopoeic and is basically the sound that is made when a loud power chord is played on a guitar. The magazine is in an on-going battle with the NME for the UK's biggest selling weekly music publication. The website is

This new style has seen the rise of bloggers in music journalism and has seen articles appearing online questioning if music journalism can still be a paid career.

Modern Plastic Drumheads

Founder Remo Belli began drumming at the age of 12, becoming a professional at just 16. After serving in the US Navy during World War II he moved to California to continue with his music career, playing jazz and swing with artists such as Anita O'Day and Betty Hutton. As an offshoot of his passion for the drums Remo and fellow drummer Roy Harte opened a store, "Drum City" in 1952 on Santa Monica Boulevard, Hollywood.
During the mid 1950s, Remo came across a polyester film, "mylar", made by the DuPont company. Mylar had originally been developed during the war as a heat resistant film for night-time reconnaissance flights, but Remo saw other potential uses for it and quickly did a few experiments, lapping it over an old wooden drum hoop. This would have far reaching effects. The animal skin heads of that period sounded great when in the right temperate conditions, but if the atmosphere got damp or too hot the drums tuning could go haywire. Mylar, being weather resistant, would offer a much more consistent drumhead offering stable tuning in all conditions.
Remo teamed up with chemist Sam Muchnick who devised a way of attaching the mylar film to aluminium hoops. The Remo Factory was thus started in 1957. These drumheads were white opaque so they didn't look too different to the animal skins of the time, and were called "Weather King" (due to being weather proof), available in 3 thicknesses - Diplomat, Ambassador, and Emperor. The more conservative jazz drummers of the age took a bit of convincing that plastic could sound as good as calfskin, but the emerging rock and roll drummers welcomed these revolutionary new drumheads with open arms... they stayed in tune and were extremely durable and hard wearing, ideal for rock music.
Through the next few decades, Remo continued to experiment, looking for new sounds to suit drummers of all musical genres. Drum Kit players loved the weather king heads, and they began to find favour with orchestral and marching band percussionists too. Top drummers of the time such as Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson were favouring Remo drumheads. Remo developed new coatings and laminations for drumheads and released some very famous drumhead lines, such as the Remo Pinstripe (a double ply head offering a deeper, dampened tone), Controlled Sound (single ply with a black sound controlling dot in the centre of the head) and the incredible Remo FiberSkyn (a laminated head giving the appearance and warm tone of calfskin heads). He offered drumheads in different finishes, originally white and then clear, and in time black and even mirror chrome. The FiberSkyn head technology was also used to devise a series of heads for Congas, Bongos and other ethnic drums, thus giving these instruments the stability and tone that he had given drumset players back in the 1950s. The increase in popularity of these world-percussion instruments led Remo to develop a huge range of drums and percussion instruments, using his FiberSkyn and NuSkyn heads along with his Acousticon shells.
To the present day, Remo continue to be innovators of quality drumheads, drums, and percussion instruments, due to the huge amount of musical styles globally, each requiring its own sound. Renaissance heads for the orchestral Percussion market, Falams for the high tension drumcorps market, Emperor heads for the rock drummers etc, the list goes on and on. Remo have even teamed up with top tattoo artist Corey Miller to produce a series of Tattoo Skyns, drumheads with unique graphics. The Remo factory today is a 217,000 sq ft facility in Valencia, California, and they remain the largest supplier of drumheads in the world, as well as being the most popular heads among today's top drummers such as Travis Barker, Steve Gadd, Lars Ulrich, Dave Weckl etc.

How to Do the Electric Slide

The original 22 steps on how to do the electric slide were created by its choreographer, Ric Silver, in 1976. It's not very complicated but a lot of simplified steps are now being taught if you try searching for other dance websites. The electric slide is quite famous in many countries. This is probably because the steps on how to do the electric slide dance are fairly easy to remember and don't hinder our enthusiasm to continually learn while enjoying it at the same time.
For many years, the unrestrictive nature of the electric dance has been the motivation of many dancers to make different variations when dancing. I've seen dancers jumping, wiggling and doing more contemporary steps added to the basic.
This article, however, will not delve much on the modern variations. Instead, this will teach you how to do the electric slide in a simpler and easy-to-learn ways.
But before we get on the actual tutorial, there are a few things that I need you to remember. It's pretty basic and if you've had some basic knowledge about dance terminologies, this is probably no longer new to you.
Grapevine
Grapevine is a series of dance steps that usually go sideways. Whether you're going to the right or left, a grapevine series will involve crossing of your legs in front or behind the other leg as you try moving sideways. At the end of each sideways count, your feet must go back to its original stance and not get crossed or tangled. This means your feet must be beside each other at the last count.
Tapping
With the electric slide, tapping means stepping your foot lightly on the dance floor without putting ample weight on the tapping foot.
Dance proper
• Do a grapevine towards the right, 4 steps/counts. At the end of the count, you may clap or not. Usually, clapping is more like it!
• Do the same grapevine series towards the left with the same counting. The same as before, you may clap or not.
• Then move 4 steps behind you, move the right foot forward then the left. Then move the left foot backward followed by the right.
• Step your foot forward and then do a semi turn and stop. Then repeat all steps.
Remember: Do not go on too extreme. If there's one thing you should know about how to do the electric slide, it's done with relaxing rocking motion. Not too fast, not too slow. Don't look restrictive, go with the beat and let yourself flow.

Electro-Acoustic Guitars

Electro-acoustic guitars work acoustically in exactly the same way as a standard acoustic guitar, meaning the main factors in their individual sound will be the size, shape and material of the body and neck. They are constructed with the same basic materials that all models use: wood, steel and very occasionally composite materials. It depends on the manufacturer and brand, but the same basic shape and production methods are used to put these finely crafted pieces together. Electro-acoustic guitars are the ideal choice for gigging musicians who want the sound of an acoustic guitar but need it to be amplified. Body shapes can be much like standard acoustic guitars, such as the box-like dreadnought, or jumbo, whilst other models such as the famous Yamaha APX or Ibanez AEG series use a smaller, thinner body, giving a feel a little more like an electric guitar. One of the leading guitarists of our time, Glen Campbell, was heavily involved with the Ovation guitar company, one of the originators of electro-acoustic guitars. Ovations models were slightly different from most others in that the back of the guitar was bowl shaped, apparently to help scoop the sound of the instrument forwards. These instruments were a huge success and Ovation are still a major brand in today's market.
The Main Advangtage of an electro-acoustic guitar is the adaptability in its preamp and the pickup which feeds it. These pickups take a few major forms.
The earliest models used a magnetic pick up in the soundhole or at the neck joint of an acoustic guitar. These pickups were essentially very similar to an electric guitars pickup. This lead to feedback problems and diminished sound quality because the complex overtones produced could not be adequately handled by such a simple device. Revised magnetic pickups are still available in single coil and humbucking forms. These more modern alternatives suffer less with feedback issues and are still the choice of many players including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame.
The most common pickup in low and mid price guitars however tends to be the piezo pickup. This is a form of what is known as transducer. This has been a popular way to amplify an acoustic since the technology's inception as it has one major advantage. A transducer works through vibrations in the top, meaning no feedback problems which are so prevalent when putting a mic in front of a standard acoustic. To this end, they are often fitted under the bridge saddle, where the vibration is at its strongest. This also hides the pickup effectively and allows for easy placement of a jack socket. Other transducers can fit underneath the soundboard, allowing for more changeable placement. This gives a greater choice in picking the various inherent tonal characteristics of the guitar to emphasise or play down as wanted.
It is also becoming popular to use a system comprising two or three separate pickups, either of differing types or in different areas of the guitars body to emphasise different tonal aspects. This has become more popular still as players like Preston Reed, Eric Roche and Andy Mckee have further popularised using the acoustic guitar percussively as part of a piece of music by tapping the guitar in various places. A transducer allows a pickup to be placed in or near the area to be hit. Picking the sound up clearly and consistently.
Of course with a system of more than one pickup, the pre amp fitted to the guitar will become even more important and will often give you the luxury of a full onboard EQ as well as a volume control or controls for the pickup/s in the guitar. EQ controls on an acoustic are designed primarily to stomp out feedback and give the player more control over their tone. For this reason, on a mid range guitar you will often find a "parametric" equalizer, meaning you can find a troublesome frequency and reduce it. This means you can find whereabouts the feedback is coming from and eliminate that particular frequency. This also means you can boost a particular frequency which may be helping your sound to cut through on stage.
Many Pre amps nowadays feature inbuilt tuners, allowing for silent onstage tuning under any light. These normally feature a small display and all the same features you would expect from a floor based tuner without the need to take an extra unit on stage.
A further positive is the straight connection into the console, which eliminates the need for a noise free studio or expensive microphone in which to pick up the signals clearly. This makes it an ideal solution for a home recording hobbyist through to a serious stage musician, and also makes getting a great sound much simpler for those who may not be too knowledgeable when it some to which mic etc will fit the bill best.
In order to make the electro-acoustic a usable tool for home practice there are a range of amps available specifically for the purpose, many featuring microphone inputs alongside those for guitars. This provides an all in one solution for singer/guitarists playing small gigs and practicing or may work as the guitarists monitor while the main sound is carried through the P.A speakers to the crowd.

Top 20 Simon and Garfunkel Hits

Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1941 and was raised in Queens, New York. Arthur Ira Garfunkel was born in Queens, New York in 1942. Fate happened in 1953 when Paul and Art met in elementary school and continued their friendship into high school.
By their junior year, they had formed the singing duo of Tom and Jerry. Influenced by The Everly Brothers, they formed their tight harmonies and recorded their first single, "Hey Schoolgirl" in 1957.
In 1958, after little success beyond their first single, Paul and Art went to separate colleges, but were reunited in 1963 and they recorded their first album for Columbia Records, "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M." Unfortunately, it failed to produce any hits after its initial release.
The duo broke up and Paul moved to England where he recorded "The Paul Simon Songbook" in 1965. During the early sixties, Paul performed under the names, Jerry Landis, Paul Kane, Harrison Gregory and True Taylor.
Stateside, a song from their first album began receiving heavy radio airplay. That song, "Sounds of Silence" became their first number one single in 1966. Paul returned home from Europe and hooked up with Art to record their second album, "Sounds of Silence."
By 1969, Paul and Art needed a break from each other. Art wanted to pursue an acting career and appeared in the films "Catch 22", "Carnal Knowledge" and "Bad Timing." They finally split in 1970, but not before recording their biggest album together, "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Simon and Garfunkel reunions have been many since their split in 1970; the first being at a benefit concert for George McGovern in 1972.

They reunited again in 1981 at a free concert in New York's Central Park, which also prompted a world tour. They reunited again in 1993 for 21 concerts and again in 2003. As recently as 2010, the duo performed a series of concerts. The concerts were postponed indefinitely, in July, due to Art's vocal chords paresis, but he hopes to be touring again in 2011.
Art has been married twice. He and his current wife, Katheryn, have two children. Paul has been married three times. His second marriage to actress Carrie Fisher lasted a year. He and his third wife, folk singer, Edie Brickell, have been married since 1992 and they have three children.
Simon and Garfunkel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. They have received three Grammy Awards and were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2003.

The Story of Gretsch Drums

The history of Gretsch drums goes back to the 1870s, when Friedrich Gretsch left Germany for a new life in America and settled in Brooklyn. His first job was with the Albert Houdlett and Son company, making drums and banjos. At the age of 27 Friedrich opened his own shop on South 4th Street, Brooklyn, in 1883, and was also involved in the production of drums, tambourines and toy instruments for various wholesalers. Unfortunately Friedrich died unexpectedly in 1895, and so his 15 year old son Fred Gretsch Sr took over the business, showing incredible business sense despite his young age. Within 5 years he had moved the company to bigger premises, and was actively promoting his business by spending time on the road selling his products to wholesalers (at this time they werent sold under the Gretsch brandname).
By 1916 the business had outgrown its premises again, and Fred moved the firm to a 10 story building in Broadway, Brooklyn, which would remain the company headquarters until the early 1970s. Production continued for many years with Gresch continuing to make products for other companies (such as Billy Gladstone). Fred Sr retired in 1942, and appointed his son Fred Gretsch Jr as president of the company, although had to take leave of these duties to serve with the US Navy during World War II, resuming in his role in 1948. During these turbulent years, the Gretsch factory produced items for the war effort rather than musical instruments. Once life got back to normal however, Fred Jr wanted to start making drums again, but this time he wanted to produce the best drums possible and spent many evenings in New Yorks music clubs, talking with working drummers and taking their opinions on board. One of their requests was for smaller, easier to carry drums. Gretsch developed the 20" bass drum, disappearing bass drum spurs and shell mounted tom holders for this purpose. A few of the famous drummers of that era such as Mel lewis and Louis Bellson started to use these new drums.. indeed it was gretsch that put together an idea of Bellsons, the first drum kit with double bass drums! Another Gretsch innovation from that time was the adjustable internal muffling tone control.
Another area in which Gretsch challenged the traditional drum making of the time was their approach to making drum shells.. rather than using shells that required reinforcing hoops, Gretsch shells became 6 plys, with each ply being joined in a different place, making for a much stronger shell that did away with the need for internal support rings. This was the start of what became known as "that great Gretsch sound". These drums were fitted with Die-Cast hoops, and by the 1950s they were the first drum company to exclusively use chrome plating rather than nickel. During this period, many of the biggest names in the jazz drumming scene were playing Gretsch drums, including Art Blakey, Max Roach and Shelly Manne, and by the 1960s they were joined by greats such as Elvin Jones, Sonny Payne and Tony Williams.
Fred Gretsch Jr retired in 1967, selling the company to the Balwin Music Group. They promptly shut the New York factory and moved it to Arkansas. Whilst the production of Gretsch drums continued, the ethos of the firm seemed to have changed, top people such as Phil Grant left the company, and the firm wasnt without its problems in both production and marketing (although the quality of the drums was never in doubt, they always remained excellent). Charlie Roy bought Gretsch in 1982 and became its president, and in 1985 the company was sold again, this time to Fred W Gretsch, the great grandson of the original founder.. Once again the Gretsch brand was back in the hands of the Gretsch family. This revitalized company moved to Savannah, and the line of drums (and guitars) met with great success. The American Gretsch drums of today are almost unchanged from those famous drums of the past... 6 ply maple shells, 30 degree bearing edges, die-cast hoops and the famous "silver sealer" paint on the inside of the shells.
