The Paul McCartney Discography - Recommended Listens

Since the dissolution of The Beatles in 1970, Paul McCartney has gone on to release over 40 or so albums either under his name alone, under various pseudonyms or with his band Wings.
It would have been nigh on impossible for any of the solo Beatles to come close to the unprecedented quality and success of the band, but all in their own ways made significant contributions to the pop canon, none more so than Paul.
I'd like to highlight a few gems from the Paul McCartney discography which confirm his knack for turning out singles and albums that were not only accessible to the average ear but, on closer listening, were slightly skewed as well.
  • Too Many People: a track from the album Ram, released 28 May 1971. A barely disguised poke in John Lennon's chest, resulting in John's far less subtle riposte on the Imagine album, How Do You Sleep. One of the few songs where McCartney comes across as annoyed.
  • Little Lamb Dragonfly : a track from the album Red Rose Speedway, released 4 May 1973. A beautiful, meandering structure with some exquisite close harmonies, predicting the return to Beatle level confidence that would manifest itself on Band On The Run.
  • Wonderful Christmastime: single released on 16 November 1979. Using splodgy, arpeggiated synth sounds as the main backdrop to a Christmas song shows McCartney's adventurism and willingness to try something off-kilter. Despite this, he still manages to convey a seasonal flavour on a song that is now a staple of Christmas radio playlists.
  • The Back Seat Of My Car: a single released in August 1971, backed with another fine song Heart Of The Country, this had been premiered during the Beatles Let It Be sessions in early 1969 but was not that warmly received. It ultimately became the anthemic finale of the Ram album. To my amazement, the single only achieved the lowly position of 99 in the UK charts. How listeners weren't seduced by those horn lines, I do not know.
  • Coming Up: the opening cut found on the McCartney II album and released as a single in April 1980, this was the song that reputedly helped inspire Lennon to return to the recording world. It boasted a raucous, variably speeded up vocal, a heavy funk backdrop and some strange, kazoo sounding trumpets parping in between some of the verses. The video was also quite groundbreaking in its inclusion of ten parodic rock music characters, all played by McCartney himself.

Become A Proficient Guitar Player By Learning Easy Guitar Songs

Many people who want to learn how to play the guitar have their own reasons for wanting to. Some just take it up as a hobby and want to acquire a new talent for them. Some people also want to become musically inclined and make guitar playing as one of the ways where they can express their creativity and themselves, while some dream of wanting to become a famous rock star and be able to perform in front of an audience someday. But before you start, you should first practice a lot with easy guitar songs.
To become a proficient guitar player, you should first have the patience to keep on practicing as well as determination to master the techniques in playing. Learning how to play the guitar is easy, but the process of becoming a novice player to an expert takes a lot of years as well as time in practicing. Many players really take their time in honing their craft before they even manage to join a band so that they will be able to play well as part of the group. One way to develop your own technique in guitar playing is to start playing with easy guitar songs.
Many guitar teachers would recommend that you constantly repeat playing chords to be able to memorize and master them, but for the new students, this is a boring way to learn because of its monotony. If you want to learn fast while keeping your practice sessions more interesting, be sure to add easy guitar songs to your repertoire and learn the chords that are required in these songs. By playing easy guitar songs rather than by just aimlessly playing a chord over and over, you will be able to enjoy practicing more. Also, you will be able to use the techniques that you have developed yourself into playing these songs.
Here are some easy guitar songs that you can try first if you do not have any idea on where to start: Help! by the Beatles, Harvest Moon by Neil Young, and It's Too Late by Carole King. Of course there are plenty of other songs that you can play. One good way of choosing is filtering through your musical tastes and start from there.
There are lots of easy guitar songs that one can play; you just have to find one that you enjoy playing for practice. There are plenty of websites that host guitar tablature that you can use for reference. There are also plenty of guitar professionals that publish videos of their guitar tutorials that you can study. What is important is that you are having fun while practicing and playing these easy guitar songs.

Badfinger were one of the first groups signed to the Beatles' new record label Apple in the late 1960s. In a previous incarnation, they were known as The Iveys and had enjoyed a moderate hit in Europe with the song Maybe Tomorrow. Despite this, the Apple hierarchy decided that the Iveys as a band name was not in keeping with the group's new power-pop direction and was considered trite for the times. The Beatles road manager Neil Aspinall stepped in and suggested the new name Badfinger (allegedly a reference to the Beatles song With A Little Help From My Friends, which had boasted a working title of Bad Finger Boogie).
Badfinger's association with The Beatles at that time gave them great kudos, but was also to dog them somewhat as comparisons with the fab four became repetitive and wearisome for the principal songwriters, Pete Ham and Tom Evans. They went on to enjoy some success in the US over the ensuing three or four years, but became hamstrung by the poor management contracts they signed along the way. The endless stream of negative ramifications following on from these signings caused huge tensions within the band and proved toxic to their career.
The first of the three Badfinger songs to have a direct Beatles connection gave them their biggest UK hit:
* Come And Get It - from the album Magic Christian Music, the song was written by Paul McCartney and the eventual recording was almost a mirror image of McCartney's demo version on which he played all the instruments. It made top ten throughout the world, landing them with a 'new Beatles' tag (for better or for worse).
* No Matter What - from the album No Dice, initially produced by the Beatles roadie Mal Evans, until final production was completed by one of the Beatles regular engineers since 1966, Geoff Emerick. There was no doubt they'd achieved a much heavier sound on here than anything they'd done as The Iveys. An outstanding lead vocal from Pete Ham, which drew favourable comparisons with Lennon and many other, heavy rock exponents of the time such as Free's Paul Rodgers and Deep Purple's Ian Gillan.
* Day After Day - from the 1971 album Straight Up, produced initially by George Harrison whose involvement was suddenly curtailed by his Concert For Bangladesh commitments. The final production credit went to Todd Rundgren. To my ear, it sounds as though the track's lucid slide guitar can only belong to George.

On The Look Out For Hot New Soul Divas!

There have been many 'new big things' promised in the world of pop and soul, but few really live up to the old classic divas, the ones who used to rule the smoky clubs of New Orleans and used their dusky voice and powerful personalities to create a name for themselves in immortality. There are too many to mention here, but if you are into soul, then you will already have a favourite.
Cast your mind back to the first time that you heard that soul or rock singer who really captured your ear; the needle hit the groove and the band began to play, with the delicate croon of bluesy soul riding over the music beneath. Wouldn't it be great if we had them now, rather than the terrible pop stars that are force fed into our daily diet of music through the radio and TV?
What seems to be lacking in today's music scene are true originals, singers that channel the spirits of their heroines in their singing and songwriting style. However, they are out there; you just have to search for them. If you trawl MySpace and Facebook music pages, then you are sure to stumble upon true talents who are constantly uploading their songs for the world to hear.
There's no doubt that the singers are out there, it just means that you have to look a little harder for them; unfortunately it doesn't require drinking down at the blues bars in New Orleans and waiting for a gorgeous singer to take the stage. Now you have to sit at you computer and wait for the next big thing to come through your stereo speakers...you can still make it fun and imagine that you were there in the heart of it though!
So tonight, or whenever it is that you have a free couple of hours, browse through the internet and see what today's soul divas are up to. You may actually be surprised at what you discover and even find a new favourite for your online record collection. It may not sound as fun as stepping into a smoky bar, but what with the smoking ban, most of the blues bars have lost that character anyway! We can all discover our new favourite singer and then, with enough support, get them to play in our local concert hall to relive the old days!
