Music Producing Software - Getting the Best Bang For Your Buck

Is it really possible to use free online music producing software to produce music? The answer is quite emphatically, no.
There are several reasons why this is so:
1. They use MP3 Tracks
As the software is based online, and you are connecting via your internet connection, you are very much limited on size of sound files. For electronic music production in particular, but really any music production, you need 44.1 stereo wav files.
MP3s are created by taking proper 44.1 stereo wav files, and stripping out the higher and lower frequencies. These are typically frequencies humans can't hear. While it may seem logical that you don't require frequencies you can't hear, think again! You may not hear them, but you can feel them. They vibrate the air, and completely change the feel of a track when you are producing music. Any music producing software that uses MP3s should be avoided.
If you are still doubtful. Try playing a track you have downloaded in MP3 format. Next, try listening to an LP12 version of the same track. You will never be able to use MP3 again for electronic music production, I guarantee you.
2. They are limited by the speed of your internet.
Again, due to bandwidth limitations, you are a slave of your internet connection when using online music producing software. Music production requires fairly powerful software. While most modern day computers have sufficient power, modern computers limited by their bandwidth do not.
You might be able to make novelty songs for your friends, but nothing broadcast quality. If you are reading this article, I'm going to assume you have more ambition for your music production.
3. They only have 8 Track Synthesizers.
If you are serious about electronic music production, then you need 16 tracks. 8 do not have the required depth to really produce amazing, broadcast quality music.
4. No training
Free online software will not come with videos on how to actually use the software to produce music. Music production takes hours of practice. Wouldn't you rather be using that time creating music, rather than wasting time trying to figure out how to use the music producing software?
5. Massively library of existing instruments and synths.
This is probably the biggest limitation of most online software. To create your own music, you need to be able to select from a library of thousands of instruments and synths. Otherwise, again, you will only be producing novelty music for your friends.
Check out what is on offer, and seriously think about getting software you can download to your computer, has 44.1 stereo quality sound files, comes with video training, has 16 track synthesizers, and has a library of existing instruments and synths for you to use. Then, and only then can you become serious in music production with professional music producing software.

New Classic Rock Guitarists - Who's Hot and Who's Not?

With a dime a dozen of guitarists out there today, picking out who's hot and who's not can be a bitter-sweet challenge.
One way to overcome this challenge is to use, what I call, the Guitar Hero Effect Test. Basically... what you do is... compare the elements of the new rock guitarist to those of the legendary guitarists... and then... note where there is a similarity... something that matches... a common ground...
The best way to do this is to create and follow a simple method... for instance... you can...
1) Determine who the new rock guitarist's biggest influences are
2) Find what they share in common with legendary guitarists
3) Then create a list that states the following...
Like... name of legendary guitarist(s)... name of new rock guitarist... list what they have in common
The best way to illustrate this is using an example. Let's take the new classic rock guitarist LYONS is r.s.p. - rock sensory perception...
You read up on Lyons is r.s.p. and find that he has many influences. These range from the Beatles, to classical composers, to many rock guitar heroes. You decide to focus in on the guitarists.
As you go over the main qualities of the legendary guitarists that have contributed to Lyons' style you uncover the following... he has definitely capitalized on the experience of his heroes.
You then start to put a list together and it ends up looking something like this...
Like... Stevie Ray Vaughn... Lyons... was deeply inspired by Jimi Hendrix
Like... Carlos Santana... Lyons... is a self-taught guitarist
Like... Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore... Lyons... plays a Strat
Like... Eric Clapton... Lyons... has a great respect for the blues
Like... Eddie van Halen and Alvin Lee... Lyons... is real fast on the guitar
Like... David Gilmour and Jimmy Page... Lyons... plays with intense feeling
Like Robin Trower and many others... Lyons... uses the Marshall Amp
So then comes the big question... is LYONS hot or not?
Considering how much and what he has in common with his guitar heroes... Lyons is definitely hot...
However, what really ends up clinching the deal is... that just like every guitar hero before him... Lyons has learnt from the best and created his own style and sound. Which in my book, conclusively makes him HOT!
He ain't no copycat! He is unique and definitely HOT!
So next time you are dilly-dallying between who is hot and who is not. Use the Guitar Hero Effects Test. It works every time.

An Introduction to Digital Audio Tape - Or DAT

DAT - What is it?
Digital Audio Tape (DAT) was an audio recording and playback medium developed by Sony - introduced in 1987 - and was intended to be the successor to the audio cassette. It is somewhat similar in appearance but at 73 mm × 54 mm × 10.5 mm it is roughly half the size; its height being comparable to an triple-A battery stood on end. DAT was a digital technology with superior maximum quality as compared to a commercial CD and was capable of making perfect digital clones from a digital source unlike other standards of the day (Digital Compact Cassette and MiniDisc) that used lossy compression.
DAT - The Technology
Very similar to video recording technology of the day, DAT used a rotating head with a helical scan to record data. The method of data storage actually worked as a security measure of sorts and prevented splicing tapes to edit them which was possible on analog tapes, digital compact cassettes, and open reel digital tapes.
The DAT standard specified four sampling modes: 32 kHz at 12 bits, and 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz at 16 bits. It was possible to find non-standard recorders that allowed recording at 96 kHz and 24 bits (HHS). DAT was unable to record long durations at the highest sample rates. The same tape at one rate could record for 6 hours and at another rate a mere 90 minutes. Only so much tape can be packed into a DAT shell.
With the more complicated rotary head the recorder mechanism was significantly more expensive for a DAT recorder than for its stationary analog counterpart. Because of this Philips and Panasonic created the Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) a less impressive but certainly enviable stationary head design that had decent quality at a reduced cost. It was no match for the DAT because of its required lossy compression but overall it did a good job and proved a static head could be used for high quality digital recordings.
DAT - Was There Ever a Need?
Despite the RIAA's lawsuits and lobbying against DAT manufacturers it eventually gained quite a following in the 1990's in the recording industry. Back in the 1990's a great many archival tapes were made using the DAT media. These archives are still available today in some places but the machines are no longer produced so unless these archives are transferred to another format it will become harder and harder with time to find archivists and audio transfer companies capable of transferring the media to a current format.
Because of DATs lossless encoding and high quality it induced no hiss or other electronic noise so became a favorite for creating perfect master copies. It is actually possible with enough digital equipment to create a complete digital chain between the microphone and the speakers on the CD player. With digital mixers and other digital hardware, analog induced problems could be completely eradicated from the majority of the process.
DAT In The Home
DAT, for many reasons, never gained a great deal of popularity with the general consumer. For the most part it was easier and less expensive to go with the alternatives. It was popular with some garage bands and boutique studios but the everyday Joe rarely saw one until their brief stint as sequential data back-up devices. Data backup tapes enjoyed a few years in the sun before being replaced by large and then ultra large external drives using the serial, parallel and later, USB ports.

It's Great To Master A Whole Song, Even If You Are A Guitar Beginner

When you're studying the guitar, it usually consists of a program of practice lessons, which are fine in isolation. You'll either visit a tutor, follow a course you can download from the Internet, or buy a book/CD on the subject. You'll be learning guitar chords and playing snippets of songs, but sometimes you may want to simply have a change, and learn a whole song. This article looks at a useful method to follow when mastering a song from beginning to end - and to make it sound great, not just OK.
It's much easier to play a song that you already know, and actually appeals to you. Therefore, listen to a recording of the song you want to play. You may have previously listened to this casually, as a fan. But now, try really listening to it - study it as a musician. Familiarise yourself deeply with the song, the type of chords changes it has, the tempo and rhythms. Really get to 'know' the song, inside out, from start to finish.
Next, you will need to identify the chords used. You can buy the sheet music from a music store, but if you want to save money, just go online and search 'chords to...' with the name of your song added. Most popular tunes will be available. Looking at the music, decide if you will play the whole song, or an abridged version e.g. the full song may include a long intro or solo you want to leave out. Print out the music and note any changes you decide on.
Now it's time to start practicing the song. Take time to master the various chord progressions, breaking the song down, initially, to small, manageable portions, if necessary. Keep doing this until you are comfortable you can play the song from start to finish without errors.
If you are like me, you'll want to attempt singing the song too. It's quite easy to get sucked into learning guitar chords, succeeding with these, and then stopping. However, it's good to go on and master the melody of the song too, by singing it. In this way you are beginning to learn how to put together a complete performance.
Remember, vocals and melody are usually the most memorable part of a song. The chords provide background and foundation: - they will certainly be missed if they are not there. But the vocal is what most people will recognise the song from. Don't worry if you are not the greatest of vocalists. At home, by yourself, it doesn't matter too much what you sound like. You may find you surprise yourself, certainly if you don't usually sing along.
As soon as possible, I recommend you make a recording of your efforts, if you have the technology available. When I began, I bought a cheap 4 track tape recorder (shows how long ago this was), and quickly got excited at the possibilities of producing multi-tracked pieces of music. I accompanied myself adding keyboard and drum machine parts (plus vocals of course) and found that by starting with just a basic home studio set up, I was learning both guitar and keyboards much more quickly, and producing recordings that I had previously only dreamed about.
