Staying Safe at Festivals This Summer

Summer is just around the corner, and that means it's time to start thinking about buying tickets for the summer festivals you want to attend! Festivals are one of the great summer traditions in the UK, and can be the highlight of your summer season. However, it's important to stay safe at festivals, since things can go wrong if you aren't careful.
First, make sure you keep your festival tickets in a secure place on your person. Festival tickets are expensive, and although it is rare, sometimes tickets are stolen from unattended bags. Typically, once you are on site you will exchange your ticket for a wristband, so you only need to keep track of your tickets until you get through the gates.
It's extremely important to look after your health while at a festival. While everyone wishes and hopes for sunny festival weekend, too much sun can send you to the first aid tent if you aren't careful. Bring a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off your face, and cover your face, hands and any other exposed skin with high-factor sun creme. Also make sure to keep hydrated-- and that means drinking water, not just lager! By consuming fluids over the course of the hot day, you will help prevent heat stroke and a possible A&E visit.
On the other end of the spectrum, many festivalgoers are familiar with the summer rain and the mud that results in rain on a dirt site. Check the forecast before you leave home, and bring wellies and extra socks to keep your feet dry. If there is mud, also be careful of where you walk to avoid slipping and twisting an ankle.
Umbrellas are frequently banned from festival sites, so instead bring your waterproof and put your hood up while enjoying your favourite band. It's important to ensure that your tent is waterproof as well, since sleeping in the damp is a good way to catch a chill and not get much sleep.

There's always a problem when choosing 'The 10 Most...' of anything. What one person considers the best is not necessarily what another person considers the best. It's only an opinion.
That aside, and with due respect to any country singer or country song not mentioned, here are 10 of what are considered by many to be the most influential country albums of all time.
Willie Nelson: Red Headed Stranger (1975)
Not wanting to join the 'Nashville Set', Willie Nelson recorded this concept album 'as is' and flatly refused to polish it up to placate his music bosses at Columbia. 'Red Headed Stranger' became a crossover sensation and included classic tracks such as 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain' and 'Time of the Preacher'. Willie Nelson at his very original and best.
Ray Charles - 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music' (1962)
This 'Ray Charles sings country' album saw the singer combine a number of honky-tonk standards with a more conventional soul sound, and is considered one of the best albums he ever produced. It's hard to deny that 'I Can't Stop Loving You',' You Win Again' and 'You Don't Know Me' are not all-time favourites.
The Byrds - 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' (1968)
Said by many critics to be the most influential album of its time, 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' is alleged to have been responsible for the birth of Country-Rock. A strong input by the legendary Gram Parsons assured it of success, and the way they mixed the gospel song 'The Christian Life' with the R&B song 'You Don't Miss Your Water' made the album worth every penny.
The Dixie Chicks - 'Wide Open Spaces' (1998)
This album, their fourth, had something for everyone. A clever mix of bluegrass and contemporary country found favour with traditional and mainstream listeners alike. 'Wide Open Spaces' also saw the long awaited commercial breakthrough for the group and featured tracks such as 'There's Your Trouble', 'I Can Love You Better' and the title track 'Wide Open Spaces'.
Kris Kristofferson - 'Kristofferson' (1970)
Following the release of this album in 1970 Kris Kristofferson was soon dubbed 'the Bob Dylan of country music'. Generations of singer-songwriters were influenced by the lyrics and style of songs like 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' and 'Me and Bobby McGee'. If proof were ever needed as to the quality of Kris Kristofferson's work it came when songs from this album were later covered by artists such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Gordon Lightfoot. Praise indeed.
Dolly Parton - 'Coat of Many Colors' (1971)
Until the release of this album in 1971 it was not widely known just how good a songwriter, as well as a singer, Dolly Parton was. The majority of the albums songs were written by Dolly herself, including the title song 'Coat of Many Colors', which became her first solo hit. This album became the inspiration for Dolly to write even more, turning her into one of country music's finest singer-songwriters.
Waylon Jennings - 'Honky Tonk Heroes' (1973)
Believed by some to be one of the greatest country albums ever recorded, 'Honky Tonk Heroes' put Waylon Jennings right up there with the top country artists of the period. Many also believe this album launched the 'Outlaw Movement', but even if it didn't, it allowed Jennings to thumb his nose at Nashville and all it stood for. Billy Joe Shaver wrote all the songs (except one), and combined with Jennings wonderful baritone voice and some brilliant arrangements, 'Honky Tonk Heroes' began a new genre of country music.
Loretta Lynn - 'Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)' (1967)
A very accomplished album by one of country's leading female singers. Loretta Lynn's strong personality showed through on every track, and the way she dealt with the difficult subjects of sex and drink inspired other songwriters to do the same. This album included a number of her best songs 'Tomorrow Never Comes', 'There Goes My Everything' and the title track 'Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind).'
Clint Black - 'Killin' Time' (1989)
A major breakthrough in mainstream/country crossover was achieved with this debut album by Clint Black. Rising quickly to the top of the charts with the help of unprecedented FM radio airplay, 'Killin' Time' was a phenomenal success. It has been said that without the achievement of this album it would have taken other crossover artists, such as Garth Brooks, much longer to make the breakthrough.
Johnny Cash - 'At Folsom Prison' (1968)
'At Folsom Prison' was recorded as part of a series of 'Jailhouse Concert Tours' Johnny Cash did as part of his 'rebel outlaw' image. The tracks are recorded live, and with his rich voice accompanied by some wonderful guitar playing, Cash showed his social skills were never lacking. The influence these 'jailhouse tours' had on the inmates can be summed up by saying that one inmate in particular, having attended a concert at San Quentin, was so inspired he took up country music himself. His name? Merle Haggard.

Flamenco Guitar Music - Origins and Innovators

Without this exchange of musical ideas and the rich cultural influences also transmitted, music would rest compartmentalized. Fixed and rooted to one location. One Culture. One Historical identity. It would touch only the locals. Not the World at large. St. Francis' words "Life is a book. If we don't travel, we only see one page" apply equally to Music.
This is especially true for the Spanish Flamenco Guitar and it's music. To fully grasp the evolution of this instrument, we must travel back in time to Cordoba, Spain. The operative date is 711. Just after the Islamic invasion. Accordingly, Cordoba had become a focal point for Islamic musicians.
It is there, at that time, that the Spanish Flamenco Guitar was born. It began as the Oud, to which a fifth string was added. The name given to the resulting instrument was the "Moorish Guitar", or "Andalucian Nuba."
The next instruments to contribute to the "melting pot" that was the creation of the Flamenco Guitar were the European Lute and the Guitar Latina. Centuries later elements of the "Moorish Guitar" were combined with these two instruments. The result was the Vihuela.
In it's most developed form, the Vihuela had six double-strings (paired courses) made of gut. Vihuelas were tuned almost like a modern guitar, with the exception of the third string, which was tuned a semitone lower. Viheula bodies were usually made from cypress, with a spruce or cedar top.
After the creation of the Vihuela, there would be three more stages of evolution necessary to arrive at the Flamenco Guitar. The first descendant of the vihuela was the baroque guitar.(MORE)
It became the precursor to the CLassical Guitar. From which the Flamenco Guitar evolved.
Flamenco Guitar Music has an equally rich and captivating History. Although it's rarely accurate to place a definite date or time on the "birth" of movement or genre, there are always people and or events of obvious importance.
Three of those people, who each passed the torch of their accomplishments on to the next, were Ramon Montoya, Sabicas, and Nino Ricardo. Montoya, the son of gypsy cattle traders, was the first to perform solo on the Flamenco guitar. Thus elevating it from it's background role accompanying singers and dancers in cafes - to the concert stage.
"Sabicas" - noted for his amazing technique and flawless sense of rhythm, further refined and evolved Montoya's accomplishments. History also remembers Sabicas as the first guitarist of his genre to introduce genuine Flamenco Music Internationally.
The saddest note in that period's History was sounded with the untimely death from liver failure of Nino Ricardo. "Little" Ricardo, hailed as the foremost guitarist of his day, began his career composing and playing in the bars of his native Seville. Those long years, in those conditions, quite probably contributed to the illness that was to claim him at age 68. Nino's upwardly curving fingernails produced a truly individual tone that other guitarists, try as they did, were unable to duplicate.
