Indulgence
We are all guilty of indulgence from time to time, aren't we? I plead guilty and am proud of it.
It seems to me that in order to really enjoy life to the full the passion that drives us to our niche must also help us find other things in which to indulge.
Hopefully we can do this in a positive and wonderful way while avoiding harmful overindulgence.
Food and Drink
Certainly we can find a way to consume a great deal of food and drink. It is an indulgence, but a terrific one. I think that having a curiosity about food and drink and really going out looking for as many experiences as possible is very exciting.
As musicians we can easily get into the habit of treating food and drink more as fuel than pleasure. Certainly to indulge in it sensibly takes discipline and interest. However, once you begin to experience the excitement and fun of trying all sorts of food and drink it can become no longer an indulgence, but a very satisfying pastime or hobby.
Because musicians often travel a lot there is that world of other cultures and other cuisines to experience.
Also since we often can't really have our relaxed main meal and drink until after the performance which may be around 11pm, we can experiment with the kind of foods that are pleasant and absorbable at that hour rather than always having to have meat and potatoes as we rush out to work.
Other Things To Consider
One thing that I and a lot of my colleagues do is to discover kinds of music which we do not or cannot perform ourselves. For instance I enjoy good jazz very much but am totally square when it comes to performing it. When travelling I also try to experience the local music both popular and classic. It is a real indulgence, but can also be wonderful fun.
Conclusion
Along with hobbies which can at times fit into this category we certainly have a wonderful world out there to explore. Not only can we do it ourselves, but we can also live through our children and families. Those of them who are not musicians can help open our eyes to a world which may be strange, but which other people do inhabit.

Gilbert O'Sullivan Lyrics - The Most Melancholy Of Them All

Born Raymond O'Sullivan in Waterford, Eire in December 1946, Gilbert O'Sullivan became one of the leading singer songwriters of the early seventies, under the stern guidance of Tom Jones' manager Gordon Mills - the man he was to successfully sue in later years, in a major dispute over Mills' record company's royalty payments.
Gilbert O'Sullivan has been largely ignored by most pop music critics; his early image perhaps alienating a sizable portion of them with its contrived, down-at-heel urchin look. It didn't get much better when he soon decided to adopt preppy, American college boy garb with a garish jumper bearing the large letter "G" on the front - not a fashion statement that has stood the test of time.
What has stood the test of time in my view is the quality of some of his songwriting, along with the clean and natural vocal style he employed. Whilst he regularly managed to construct and carry a strong melody, it is the lyrics to some of his early work that I find fascinating.
His first major hit in 1970, Nothing Rhymed, set the tone for much of his writing over the next couple of years. Resolutely melancholic, there seemed to be a hint of Charlie Chaplin-like pathos lurking around every line:
'When I'm drinking my Bonaparte shandy, eating more than enough apple pies
Would I stare at my screen and see real human beings, starve to death right in front of my eyes?'
This is surpassed by the lyrics to the song that broke him internationally, Alone Again (Naturally). The record was a number one chart hit in the US, Canada and Japan and reached number three in the UK. It can be conservatively described as resolutely downbeat. Even the ubiquitous Steven Morrissey from The Smiths might struggle to articulate such despair
'And at sixty-five years old - my mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken - despite encouragement from me, no words were ever spoken
And when she passed away, I cried and cried all day - alone again, naturally'
Over the next couple of years, O'Sullivan seemed content to flourish at the more throwaway end of the pop spectrum, with such lightweight hits as Matrimony, Ooo-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day and Get Down, light years from the harsh depictions of reality embedded in his earlier work. Alone Again (Naturally) is, to me, the most melancholy of all Gilbert O'Sullivan lyrics, and his finest pop moment.

As a postscript, there's a new artist I've discovered called James Henry, whose style is reminiscent in some ways to that of Gilbert O'Sullivan. Lyrics are paramount to James - checkout his song, Saturday Morning, which you can download below for free. The guy has serious potential - as long as he avoids that cloth cap and short trousers.

Music Producers Have To Get Their Start Somewhere

We all must start some where when were looking to make our mark in this music industry. Whether you're a person who wants to make beats and produce music for top-notch talent, then you must start some where so your work can be put on display.
Many young producers start out with just a keyboard and maybe a hand me down computer that barley has any new technology on it. So with these type of challenges it becomes more and more hard to become the next big music producer by making beats off old equipment.
One of the best ways to get started is to go out to parties and sit back and see what type of equipment the DJ's are using. See if its brand new because if it is then they may have some keyboards or something they're not using and just sitting in a closet some where.
Most people who you meet like this have been in your shoes before and they know the hardship of not having the right things to make your journey go easier. So you may be able to become friends with these people and do some free work for them in exchange of you using their older equipment.
This just a suggestion if you really want to start becoming one of the most talked about producers if your budget isn't up to par yet. Then you must get creative in this business if you want to reap the benefits and piggy back off other people success.
There is another way to get your name out there which to find some young talented kids and tell them that you will do their producing for free but you will get paid a percentage of any booking sales. Even if you make the best beats of all time, if you never take that step in the light and push the issue on being the best you can be..then you will fall by the waste side.
