James Brown: A Strict Disciplinarian, a Brilliant Songwriter, and the Night He Saved Boston

James Brown ran a tight ship in terms of his band, backup singers, and staff. He believed that the audience deserved to get the best show he could give and he always delivered.
Disciplinarian: One of the things he was known for in terms of his staff is that their pay would be docked if they broke his rules for such things as being late or their appearance not being exemplary. For example in terms of appearance, one story concerned his backup singers' stage clothes. If a singer's dress was not pressed properly for the performance he would point to the singer and flash either one or two fingers at her. The amount of fingers represented the amount that would be deducted from the girl's pay. Obviously a singer learned quite quickly that her paycheck could be reduced quite a bit after a week of performances if she had too many mistakes. So in that sense he was a strict disciplinarian but it was always done with his belief that the audience deserved the best performance and appearance from him and his group.
Songwriting: When it came to songwriting he was better than good. He was outstanding. Even while performing, if he got an idea for a song it would not be unusual for him to tell the group that after the show or the following day they were going to go to a recording studio and put down some tracts of his idea.
James had a philosophy about writing music. A musician once said James would sometimes put in a measure that defied music writing logic as it was something that just wasn't done. But James had always said I don't care if it's the way music should be written or not. If it sounds good, we're going to record it as is.
The Night that James Brown Saved Boston: This goes back to April 5, 1968. He was scheduled to appear in concert on that date at the Boston Garden. It just so happened that it was the day after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
The mayor of Boston, Kevin White and the City Council were on the verge of canceling the concert as there had been several incidents of rioting in cities across America as a result of Martin Luther King's assassination. The politicians felt that a concert could have evoked a riot and with thousands of people in one area the results could be devastating. Others felt that the concert would be a healing of sorts and that it should go on as to cancel it might also incite rioting. In conversations with James Brown and his people the officials made the decision to allow the concert to take place.
On the night of the concert James Brown not only sang but talked to the audience. The majority of the concert went well until towards the end some of the crowd nearer the front attempted to storm the stage. Officials were afraid that a riot would break out as a result of a shoving incident. Some of the people from the audience that were on stage just wanted to be close to him. James took charge of the situation and talked with the people. He shook their hands and encouraged them to go back and sit down as it wasn't fair to the rest of the audience if they could not see or hear the rest of the show. He said to everyone over the microphone that he understood them and their struggles along life's way. He said that he had grown up in hardship and poverty when he was young. More importantly though he stressed the importance of respect and wanting them to respect him as well as each other and to be proud they were black.
The crowd returned to their seats and the rest of the concert continued without incident. After the concert was over people left peacefully and there were no occurrences outside the venue as most of the concert goers went on their way peacefully. What James Brown did for race relations that evening deserves the biggest thank you that can be given.
The following day newspapers reported that with the thousands of people at the gathering and not one incident of rioting taking place that the people of Boston could be very proud of the way they handled themselves.
As if we haven't learned enough about James Brown listen to this. He was a man's man. Even though he did not approve of the Vietnam War he did several shows for veterans overseas because he felt that we should support the troops. And this was during a time when the American Public was fed up with the war and was strongly against it.
In conclusion I can only say that I am proud to write this article about a man who gave so much more than his music to society. There are many lessons to be learned here for music students about this brilliant songwriter and an activist who made it possible for an audience to peacefully enjoy a great show.

Choosing the Perfect Wedding DJ

When planning your wedding there is always a lot of detail and arrangements to be made so it's best to be prepared and make yourself a list. A list can ensure you don't miss anything, help you prioritise things to do, and sort out what details need to be booked first.
The entertainment at your reception is one such item that should be high on your tick list, and it's wise to book it well in advance as popular and well-known wedding singers and DJs are booked up very early and you don't want to miss getting the best!
When carrying out your research the first thing you need to do is decide how much you can afford and stick to it. You'll be surprised at the difference in price quotes you'll get - as with anything the cheapest will more than likely also be the worst but you don't necessarily have to opt for the most expensive either. Check out how much experience they have and what the price includes as well as references and customer testimonials and go with the one you yourself like the best after listening to a video of them.
Don't forget to ask them for details, such as how long their set lasts for; times they play from and to; breaks; and if there are any extras costs you need to be aware of like transport or accommodation arrangements and so on.
Always ask people you know if they have any recommendations, perhaps they had a great dj play at their own wedding or know of a friend who works part-time as one and is very good. Friends, people you work with and your own family together add up to a lot of people so it's always worth asking around. Then make a shortlist of acts you want to contact for further information.
Once you have selected 2 or 3 DJs you like the sound of it's time to set up an interview with them. Meeting up with them in person means you can get to know them a little and ask them about their style - find out if they joke with the audience, what payment methods do they accept, and generally just see if you like them and are happy to book them for the night. You will probably be getting together more than a few times before the wedding day arrives to discuss your song list so it makes sense to go with someone you have a rapport with.
DJs have to have insurance and a license to play so check they comply with these regulations before booking them. It's also recommended you get a contract, can you imagine if it all goes horribly wrong on your wedding day and there's nothing you can do about it because you didn't have anything in writing?
Take a look online and you'll find some of the UK's top wedding singers advertising their services, these are the ones that are booked well in advance so you have to be quick off the mark if you want them to play at your wedding.
A top  know all the favorites, how to stir the crowd up and get them up and dancing. They'll have compiled a song list with thousands of tracks covering all kinds of styles from love songs and slow dance to pop and chart, disco and well-known favorites. Put your heads together to tailor your own wedding music list and don't forget to arrange the song for the first dance!
A professional should be set up, have completed their sound check and be ready for when the guests start to arrive. Basic costs should include pre-recorded background music, the first dance, a few hours of live singing in segments throughout the evening, a fully functional and supervised disco in between live sets for a full evening's music and an extensive disco play list. Your wedding singer might offer extras from pre-recorded music whilst you have dinner, to an L.E.D. light Show or a dance floor of bubbles!
Searching for a wedding singer Bristol, or in any other location, the internet always brings up lots of options, go to wedding entertainment websites and listen to song list wedding sung by the artists themselves, watch a video of the show, or see their music sample list. Don't waste anymore time - be organized and start looking today!

Confused By Guitar Effects - What Is the Difference?

Since Guitar Effects Pedals are so abundant now, how do you know what to use for your next gig! What is the difference between the flanger and the phase shifter and the Tremolo.
Guitar Effects Pedals are difficult to categorize due to the multitude of sounds. In this article I will be discussing pedals that affect your pitch and frequency. These pedals include the following types: Chorus, Flanger, Phase Shifter, Pitch Shifter and harmonizer, ring modulator, Tremolo, and Vibrato. I'll focus on a few of these.
Chorus Effect: If you have ever heard a choir sing or an orchestra play then this is what chorus effects are like. The only difference is in the timbre and pitch. A chorus effect adds vibrato to part of the signals.
Types of Chorus Effects include: Dunlop Uni-Vibe stereo chorus, Erockson Chorus Pedal, BOSS Chorus Ensemble, Visual Sound Liquid Chorus, Dunlop MXR stereo chorus pedal, MXR Micro Chorus pedal.
Flanger Effect: Flanging is produced by 2 identical sounds which are mixed together and 1 is delayed. Some describe it as a jet plane sound. The what is now called Flanging sound was in use for more than 20 years before the first portable stompbox was made to be used by guitarists.
Types of Flanger Effects Pedals include: Dunlop MXR Flanger, Dunlop MXR Micro Flanger, Erockson Flanger, Boss Flanger
Phase Shifter: Filters a signal causing peaks and troughs in it's frequency. Phase shifters are similar to flangers but they have a more out of this world type sound.
Types of Phase Shifter Effects include: Pigtronix Envelope phaser pedal, Garagetone Oil Can Phaser Pedal, BOSS Phase Shifter, BBE Soul Vibe, Electro-harmonix small tone phaser shifter, Erockson Phaser pedal, MXR phase 90 and phase 100
Pitch Shifter: Does exactly what it says. It changes the pitch. It can raise a note or lower a note to a different pitch that you choose.
Types : Dunlop's MXR Blue Box Octave Fuzz, Dunlop's Jimi Hendrix Octavio Effect
Tremolo Effect: Makes a trembling type sound by causing a rapid change in the volume of a note.
Types of Tremolo Effects include: Dunlop MXR Tremolo stereo effect, BBE Tremor Dual Tremolo pedal, BOSS Tremolo, Garage Tone Tremolo Pedal.
Musicians have been using Guitar Effects for decades to take their music to the next level. Can you imagine music without them today? Wow, what a difference Effects Pedals have made!

Bono Bio

Bono, front-man for the band U2. What? You say you don't know who either one is? Well then, what crater on the moon have you been living in for the last 30 years? Bono, as well as U2 have practically been household names since the mid to late eighties. Arguably the most influential band of the last 3 decades, Bono, as the charismatic lead of the band is both a musical icon and a strong political and social activist. Rarely, has a celebrity of Bono's status been able to maintain a healthy balance between the world of music and the political arena as successfully as he has done. This superstar is not just talk. As co-founder of the humanitarian organizations, DATA and ONE, along with other numerous charities and programs, Bono has more than proven his resolve to help the needy and less-fortunate.
Paul David Hewson was born May 10, 1960 to Brendan Robert Hewson and Iris Elizabeth Rankin in the suburb of Ballymun in Dublin, Ireland. He was their second child. Interestingly enough, the Hewson's had a mixed marriage. Bobby Hewson, (as he was known to all), was a catholic, while Iris, was a protestant. In Ireland, that's as mixed as you can get. The two groups have never gotten along, going back to the 17th century. Paul Davids' early childhood was uneventful and ordinary, until he began school, which began at the 'Inkwell', a Protestant school. Then onto St. Patrick's Cathedral choir school, where he was dismissed for throwing dog feces at his Spanish teacher. Bono would later describe his time at the two schools as 'unhappy, until he was asked to leave'. Paul David would find happiness, however, when, in 1972, he began attending Mt. Temple, Ireland's first comprehensive and non-denominational high school. Young Paul settled in comfortably to his new situation. While he was no honor student, he did have a flair for art and history and was finally happy. Tragedy was about to strike however. In 1974, while attending her fathers' funeral, Paul's mother collapsed and died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage. Paul, now 14 years-old, was devastated. Now it was his home-life that would be a source of problems for him, since he and his father never 'got on well with one another', Bono would later say.
Shortly after his mom's passing, Paul would receive his first nickname, Steinhegvanhuysenolegbangbangbang. Yes, it's for real. I couldn't make that one up.It would change later to BonoVox of O'Connell St. after a hearing-aid store, then to Bono Vox, which is cockeyed Latin for 'good voice'. Finally, it was shortened to Bono, and it stuck. From what I've read, Bono was quite the ladies man. He entertained the company of several young ladies. Then, in 1976, he met Alison Stewart, who he would later marry in 1982. They would have four children and remain together to this day. Let's see, rockstar marries high school sweetheart and 30 years later still happily married? That alone is worth writing about!
In late '76, 16 year-old Bono had been leaning towards interest in acting, when he read a notice on his school's bulletin board. Local boy and schoolmate, Larry Mullen was inviting musicians over to his home for band auditions. Besides Bono, several boys showed up at Larry's house, including 15 year-old guitarist David Evans, (later to be known as the 'Edge'), and bassist Adam Clayton, (who. at the time could not play bass), came together for the first time. A couple members came and went along with a couple of name changes for the band. First, they we're 'Feedback', then, 'the hype', and finally settling on U2, with the final member lineup being, Bono on lead vocals, Edge on guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, and Larry Mullen on drums. This was U2.
Right away it was evident that Bono, as a live performer, had something unique and special. With his energy and his ability to project his emotions onto the crowd, he was able to form a strong bond with audiences. This made the band very popular and soon they had a local following that was growing rapidly. In 1978, the band won a talent contest in Limerick, Ireland. The prize was 500 pounds. Soon after that, they got themselves management in the form of Dublin businessman, Paul McGuiness. With his help, U2signed a record deal with Island records and released their first studio album, 'Boy' in 1980.It was received well at home and in the U.K.. In '81 the band released album no. 2, 'October'. Again, it did well in Ireland and Britain. Now America was waiting for the young band. In 1983, U2's 3rd album, 'War', was released in the states.
Thanks to MTV's heavy running of videos for two songs off the album, 'Sunday, Bloody, Sunday' and 'New Years Day', the band got plenty of exposure. The buzz about the lads from Ireland was mostly positive, however, the aggressive, drum thumping lyrics of some of the songs raised eyebrows of a few critics and listeners. Bono stepped up immediately to explain the songs were in no way praising war or violence in any way, just the opposite, the songs were anti-war all the way. The band's front-man even draped himself in a large white, flag during live performances' to send the point home. Soon it was a no-issue. Later, album number 5, 'the Unforgettable Fire', would be not only a critical success, but a commercial one as well for Bono and U2. The song 'Pride' was a breakout chart hit and live shows were drawing numerous fans, as U2 was maturing and fine-tuning their already talented act. Bono of course, was as entertaining and charismatic as always. In 1987, the boys from Dublin grew up in a big way with the release of  'Joshua Tree'.  The album would be their most heralded to date thus far. Bono had reached the height of his popularity at the close of the '80's. He had surpassed the role of rockstar to become something of a cultural hero. His humanitarian work outside U2 endeared him to many. His trueness and staying power to these causes has made him a champion to thousands of people. Throughout the '90's this was the case to the point he has since almost become more famous for his causes than the music has created......almost. At the onset of the new century, Bono rallied many fellow celebs to various causes. He and his wife, Ali has started a World Humanitarian Organization for countries like Ethiopia.

Uncommon Knowledge About Stradivarius Violins

Every career holds passionate men who love their craft. Those that I'm speaking of become so consumed by their work that they forever change how the world views their craft. As luthiers, the Stradivari family was a prime example of this to such a degree that their techniques were analyzed to attempt reproduction. The word Stradivarius has even become a term for excellence.
Most of this wasn't the family's work as a whole, but Antonio Stradivari's. He was born in 1644 in Italy. Some of his skills were passed on through his progeny, but not to the same degree.
It is not known exactly what processes were used or what made these instruments so great. Many theories exist about this and a few experiments have been done. A few theories focus on what the violins were made of. There was a "little iceage" in Europe around this time that made trees grow with higher density wood. The higher density in violins was said to give it a superior quality. The other common theory, also relating to a higher density, was that the wood came from maple trees in northern Croatia.
As far as the processes that are rumored to make these violins so great are concerned, it was found that certain chemicals used to treat the wood resulted in a higher quality sound. These chemicals were suspected to be oxidizing agents. Whether these wood treatments were for the purposes of sound or to stave off worms that liked to eat through the wood is a question still up for grabs. The exact chemicals used are not yet known. This is not due to the lack of science, but due to the lack of samples to analyze.
Antonio Stradivari produced approximately 1,200 violins during the course of his life. Only about 600 remain today. Each violin is worth a huge amount, up to $5 million a piece, but estimates vary. In October 2010 one was sold for a record $3.6 million. This was the Molitor, created in 1697 and supposedly owned by Napoleon Bonaparte. Between the years 1700 and 1720 were known as Stradivari's "golden period" and may sell for more in good condition.
Is the sound quality really that good? Their quality and worth has become more controversial over time. Blind tests have been done in which listeners were requested to guess which violin was the Stradivarius, by sound, out of a lineup. In one test there were four violins, the Stradivarius included, all from various makers and time periods. None could correctly guess more than two correctly. Two even believed that the violin of the group that was made in the 1900's was the Stradivarius.
Another test was done in 2009 where a Stradivarius violin was pitted against four of Ronheimer's more modern violins. The majority of the listeners mistook one of Ronheimer's violins as the Stradivarius.
So does this mean that the quality of the widely-loved Stradivarius violins is a fluke or that Antonio Stradivari didn't create excellent violins? I wouldn't go that far, but the quality may have been exaggerated. The rumors of quality may have been started due to his location or connections. It is also possible that many of the violins have lost some sound quality due to

Top 20 Dionne Warwick Hits

Born in East orange, New Jersey, in 1940, Marie Dionne Warwick cut her singing teeth in her church choir at the age of six. It was inevitable that Dionne would make music her career, since she is the sister of Dee Dee Warwick, her aunt is Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom) and her father was the manager of the famed family gospel group, The Drinkard Singers.
Dionne attended Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, after receiving a scholarship. That same year, she formed the group, The Gospelaires, with Dee Dee. Cissy Houston and Doris Troy, of "Just One Look" fame, joined The Gospelaires later. They did a lot of studio backup work in New York City, during the late fifties, and can be heard on recordings by The Drifters, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley.
Dionne's voice came to the attention of composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David. In 1962, she signed with Bacharach and David's production company, which became Scepter Records.
Dionne's first single was "Don't Make Me Over", a phrase that Bacharach and David heard the young singer use when she was angry at the duo. It turned out to be her first Top 40 single. From then on, she became Bacharach and David's "main voice."
On the charts, Dionne has had 31 Top 40 singles, with three of them going to number one. Here are Dionne Warwick's twenty biggest hits, according to Billboard's Weekly Top 40 Charts.
1. That's What Friends Are For - 1986 - Dionne's biggest hit came 23 years after her first top 40 hit and features her friends, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder and topped the charts for four weeks.
2. Then Came You - 1974 - Dionne's only Top 10 hit for the Atlantic label, it holds the unfortunate record for dropping the most positions, to #15, the week after it reached number one.
3. (Theme From) Valley of the Dolls - 1968 - From the film of the same title, the song was to be recorded by Judy Garland, but was given to Dionne when Judy was fired from the film. It is also the "B" side to Dionne's hit "I Say A Little Prayer."
4. I Say A Little Prayer - 1967 - Also a Top 10 hit for Aretha Franklin a year later, Dionne's version holds the unique record for being in the year end Top 100 of 1967 and the flip side, "(Theme From) Valley of the Dolls" (see above) making it to the year end Top 100 of 1968.
5. I'll Never Love This Way Again - 1979 - Produced by Barry Manilow, this was Dionne's first hit for the Arista Label.
6. Walk On By - 1964 - This Bacharach-David composition has also been covered by Gloria Gaynor, Isaac Hayes, Cyndi Lauper and Seal. Dionne also recorded a German version.
7. I'll Never Fall In Love Again - 1970 - From the musical, "Promises, Promises", Bobbie Gentry's version went to number one in England a year before Dionne's release.
8. This Girl's In Love With You - 1969 - A number one hit for Herb Alpert in 1968 under the title "This Guy's In Love With You", Dionne went Top 10 a year later with a female spin to the title.
9. Anyone Who Had A Heart - 1964 - Dionne's first Top 10 hit was reportedly done in one take.
10. Message To Michael - 1966 - Recorded by Jerry Butler in 1962 as "Message To Martha", it was also recorded by actress Marlene Dietrich in 1964.
11. Heartbreaker - 1982 - written by The Bee Gees, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, they can also be heard providing backup vocals.
12. Do You Know The Way To San Jose - 1968 - Although Dionne thinks the song is dumb; the song has meaning for lyricist Hal David, who spent time in San Jose while in the Navy.
13. Love Power - 1987 - Written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, Dionne's last Top 20 single is a duet with vocalist Jeffrey Osborne.
14. Déjà Vu - 1980 - Co-written by Isaac Hayes and produced by Barry Manilow, Dionne won two Grammy Awards in 1980; one in the R&B category for this song and one for "I'll Never Love This Way Again" in the pop category, making her the first artist to win Grammys in the R&B and Pop categories in the same evening.
15. Alfie - 1967 - Although Cher's version was used in the soundtrack of the film of the same title, Dionne's version did better on the charts.
16. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling - 1969 - A number one hit for the Righteous Brothers in 1965, Dionne went Top 20 with it and Hall and Oates would also go top 20 in 1980.

Wedding Bands/Music - Choose the Right One for Your Big DayWedding bands/music plays an integral part of any wedding and hence it is important that you choose the right music and songs for your big day. There are different types of music that can be played at a wedding ceremony and each has to be selected according to the event. Usually the different sets of music or songs required vary according to the function which includes seating of the guests, bridal march, wedding ceremony, wedding march and the reception. It is entirely up to you and your partner to decide whether you want to go in for live wedding bands/music or prerecorded music. Usually the songs and music selected to play on the D-day is a true reflection of the style and taste of the bride and groom. It can either be in accordance with the culture and traditions of the couple or the wedding theme. The couple can also go in for songs that are close to their heart, maybe a few pieces that marked special moments of their courtship. Even the royal wedding witnessed something similar when Prince William decided to play the song dedicated to his mother during the ceremony. There are so many options these days on how to play the songs or music on your wedding day. You can either go in for a live wedding band or hire a string quartet; a modern twist would be a live DJ or keep costs low by playing your musical choices through an iPod. If you prefer a traditional ceremony infused with some old world charm, then live wedding bands/music is the perfect way to keep the music flowing. One of the advantages of using a live band is that there is a certain warmth and intimacy to the whole set up which helps to connect with the audience better. Another high point is that the band members can assess the mood of the crowd and also make the evening more entertaining and memorable. But a disadvantage is that there is a limit to the number as well as kind of songs that will be played by a band. Most wedding bands have a pre-fixed set of wedding songs; if you require anything new or extra, the band has to be informed well ahead to learn and rehearse the song for the function; this could also push up the expenses further. Selecting the music or song for the first dance is another important aspect; choose one that is comfortable for both you as well as your partner. Take care not to choose a very slow or very fast number unless you are professional or trained dancers. And also choose a song that has meaningful lyrics and holds special memories for the two of you rather than picking up the latest hit number.
