3D Music Videos Should Be On Every Band's Agenda

3D is the 'now' technology - again! Yes it's a little hard to work out why it's suddenly back after disappearing the first time around in 1987. Or perhaps the mystery is why it ever went away to begin with, since people actually seem to dig it quite majorly. Whatever. My question is: could it work in a music video clip?
Yes, I know that most of us would find it a bit weird donning a pair of geeky, round, thick-rimmed, plasticky glasses to watch a musical performance. Hey, wait a sec, that's a good description of every third indie kid in Shoreditch!
So I guess style is not such a concern in the current climate of of geek chic, and personally I think that a lot of people would make the effort in order to see their favourite vids in a different light. Hot Chip's "I feel better", for example - now that would rock in 3D. Just picture that beam of destructive energy from the white monk's mouth powering towards you in three glorious dimensions. Or Bat for Lashes' "When you love someone" - having those wolf BMX riders leaping out of the screen towards you would be very fun. And we all know that the more up close and personal we can get with our favourite sexy lead singers, the better!
Then there's the issue of screen technology. Fear not. If you follow the tech sector you'll know that manufacturers are now bringing out 3D-capable screens for everything from flat screen TVs down to handheld devices. Oh and some of those at least claim not to require the aforementioned glasses - so, indie kids, if you really want to make a fashion statement, but one of these extra special screens, wear nothing on your face, and be different!
But the overriding reason to make 3D music videos is to shake this genre up a little. Frankly, music videos are often boring. Technically speaking, nothing much has happened to the genre for a few years now. It's a testament to the un-dynamic nature of the competition that a few videos that, when the White Stripes used that tunnelling effect in 'Seven Nation Army' so many bands jumped on the bandwagon and released videos with the exact same effect and people just seemed to keep lapping it up like it was something original. The same thing happened when Gnarles Barkley realised 'Crazy', with its dominant 70s-esque Rorscharch Inkblot mirroring effect. Dozens of videos that used this effect followed, which is made all the funnier by how very easy that effect is to create now with digital video programmes.
In other words, we need another technology that would allow people to branch out a little and achieve some distinctive new looks and have an impact on the audience.
Of course, for indie video producers, 3D is going to be a big challenge as well as an opportunity. Not all cameras are capable of it, so there's there's a cost barrier to getting started. And shooting in 3D complicates things - even to get the basics right requires a fair bit of knowledge about scene layout and camera angles. But with a bit of sweat, us indie producers could be way out in front of the major labels producing the 'same old same old' as always.

JLS Facts

JLS facts are not hard to come by seeing as the band was established in a public manner via the television show, The X Factor.
JLS stands for Jack the Lad Swing and consists of four members. Aston Merrygold was born on the 13th February 1988, Marvin Hume was born on the 18th March 1985, Jonathan "JB" Gill was born on the 7th December 1986, and Oritsé Williams was born on the 27th November 1986.
The formation of the band is the result of Oritsé deciding to get involved with the music industry as a member of a boy band due to his mother suffering from multiple sclerosis. His ambition was to raise money to help find a cure of the disease. Oritsé initially wanted to be a part of an existing band but was not satisfied with the groups he found as he wanted a band that had a close bond. As a result of his dissatisfaction, he decided to create his own band.
Oritsé met with Marvin through friends, and soon after, Aston joined the band, with JB being the final member, who was welcomed by the others because of his strong 'musical ear.' JB is often considered the 'harmoniser' of the group because of his vocal ability.
The foursome, now known as JLS was originally called UFO, standing for Unique Famous Outrageous. They received raved reviews before being signed by a major record label. In 2007, they were awarded for Best Unsigned Act at the Urban Music Awards under their previous name, UFO.
JLS, still known as UFO, auditioned for The X Factor show in 2008, where they changed their name to the now widely know JLS after the name UFO had already been taken by another group. The guys were a quick favourite with the judges, considered to be the winning act by Simon Cowell after performing the Rihanna smash hit song "Umbrella." The band made it to the final but was beaten by Alexandra Burke who got to perform with Beyonce Knowles on the night. Although the band came in second place, they were already firmly in the public eye and were swiftly given a recording deal by Epic Records in January 2009.
In July 2009, the JLS debut single "Beat Again" was released, which reach number 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart, with an album that shortly followed. JLS concert dates were soon released with thousands of tickets being snapped up by fans who till this day remain loyal to the band.
After only a few short years in the public eye, the band are loved by millions of fans across the country, with more people - namely teenage girls - following the band's career dedicatedly. Their second album, "Outta This World" has seen demand for JLS Tickets soar, with fans wanting to see them perform their rave review dance sequences. Recently, the band announced the release of the JLS 3D Concert Movie title "Eyes Wide Open," which is being shown simultaneously across cinemas nationwide in June. A "JLS ticket" to this concert movie screening is treasured by fans leading the boy band to grow their fan base with amazing reviews from both fans and critics.
JLS are said to be working on their third album, which is predicted to garner an even bigger fan base, with JLS concert tickets set to be a high commodity when news of new JLS tour dates are released.

Rockabilly's "Mystery Train" Helped Put Elvis On the Map, But Junior Parker Recorded It First

The song "Mystery Train" has become one of the most iconic classics of the rockabilly genre and in fact of all rock and roll. The song has it all: a great, mood-invoking vibe, wonderful driving slap-bass work by Bill Black, one of the most perfect guitar parts ever recorded courtesy of Scotty Moore, and of course Elvis' flawless, raw, powerful vocal delivery. And the song itself is one of those rare gems that stands strong on its own, separate from the performance. But though Elvis and the boys own this song with their amazing performance of it, Elvis didn't write it. So, where did it come from? Well, that gets to the roots of rockabilly!
Elvis recorded the song in late summer of 1955. He was already on the way up and rising fast. The song was recorded in the legendary Memphis Recording Service studios on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. It was originally released on the equally legendary Sun Records label as the B-side to the song that really put Elvis on the map nationally: the number one country hit "I Forgot to Remember to Forget." Even as the B-side, "Mystery Train" reached number 11.
However, this wasn't the first release the song had seen. The song had been written in 1953 by the bluesman Junior Parker. Studio and Sun Record label owner Sam Phillips is credited as co writer, but it's often difficult to tell with songs written in those days whether anyone besides the musician who is credited really did help write the song or whether there were credited as part of the record deal or other arrangements. In any event, Parker's original recording was released--also on Sun Records--in 1953.
Parker's version is up tempo and in its own right just as great at Elvis'. In it you can really hear how the blues influenced the early rockabilly musicians. Elvis clearly borrowed heavily from these blues players as well as the rhythm and blues music he'd heard so much of growing up. He took that influence and mixed it in with his country roots to become the driving force behind rockabilly music and, for that matter, all of rock and roll.
In my opinion, Elvis' version of "Mystery Train" is the perfect embodiment of the Sun Records rockabilly sound. If someone needed the ultimate example of rockabilly, "Mystery Train" would be one of the songs I would point them too. It totally exemplifies the melding of blues and country music that morphed into rockabilly music. Although the country music world--by all outward appearances--seemed to have had the bigger impact on rockabilly music, this song proves that it would never have happened without great blues and rhythm and blues songs and artists.

My All Time Favourite 10cc Songs

I first came across 10cc around 1973, not long after they'd had their first UK number one with the song Rubber Bullets. I thought they were American, judging by the lead vocalist's falsetto on that memorable hit, but soon discovered they were from Manchester in the north of England. I was re-acquainted with them when they were the subject of an ITV Schools Programme in 1974, when the recording session for the song The Dean And I was filmed.
A couple of years and albums later, I was a paid up fan and terribly saddened to hear of their split in 1976, soon after the release of How Dare You. Although they continued with two original members, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart, that intangible 10cc chemistry seemed to have evaporated once Kevin Godley and Lol Crème had committed themselves long-term to other ventures, including directing pop videos.
It is from these first four albums, boasting the classic 10cc line up, that I've selected my all time favourite 10cc songs.
*Silly Love - from the album Sheet Music, released in 1974, the single climbing to No. 24 in the UK. I remember hearing this song on BBC Radio 1, on one of the first mornings I had to leave to get a bus to my new secondary school. From then on, hearing the record's opening bars takes me right back to sitting on that bus, heading into the unknown. I often wondered if the lyric had been inspired by the BBC TV comedy Monty Python's Flying Circus?
*I'm Not In Love - from the album The Original Soundtrack, released in 1975. A multi-layered production with a gorgeous melody and an interesting spoken word section in the middle, delivered by the Strawberry Studios receptionist, it became a worldwide hit and a pop standard.
*Life Is A Minestrone - from side 2 of the album The Original Soundtrack, the song's title was allegedly part of some throwaway banter from a radio talk show. The band's lyrical sense of humour was much in evidence, in lines such as 'I'm leaning on the tower of Pisa; had an eyeful of the tower in France...'

Larry Mullen's Band?

The group U2 has its history like any band. From meager beginnings in Dublin, Ireland, to worldwide fame and stardom. If you know anything about U2, you know that charismatic lead singer, Bono, has been the focal point of the group. With his energetic and stirring live performances to his many charitable causes, when you hear U2, you probably think of him first off. Guitarist, the Edge, with his inexplicable sound and style has also been a focal point in the band. But, has it ever occurred to you, that if not for drummer Larry Mullen's desire to begin a band, U2 might have never formed.
Larry Mullen Jr. was born on Halloween in 1961 in Artane, on the north-side of Dublin. Born with the original name, Larry Mullen, he added the Jr. later to distinguish himself from his father, Larry Mullen Sr. Larry Jr.'s musical career began when he was 8 yrs-old with piano lessons. Soon, however, the lad got bored with studying piano scales and music theory, so in 1971, he took up drumming instead. Larry was able to take classes under the tutelage of Joe Bonnie, Ireland's best known drummer. Just a year later, though, Bonnie passed away and his daughter, Monica took over the lessons. Larry has always felt that his style was 'unteachable'. He would rather play by instinct and spirit, saying that 'sometimes he just wanted to hit it'. In '73, sister, Cecelia, bought Larry his first drum kit. All this led to the day on September 25, 1976 he would post the note on Mt. Temple's bulletin board, calling for fellow musicians to come to his home to audition for a band. The auditions took place in Larry's kitchen. The original lineup for the group was as follows, Bono-Vox on vocals, David Evans, (the Edge), and his brother Dick on guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, and, of course, Larry Mullen Jr. on drums. Larry claims that the bands' real name is actually, 'The Larry Mullen Band'.
But dark clouds loomed on the horizon. Mother, Maureen Mullen, died tragically in a road-traffic accident in 1978. Her death affected Larry a great deal. But it was also a driving force in his growing committment to U2, which was in question by his bandmates, because of his absentee's at gigs and photo-shoots. Often, forcing the other band members to get a stand-in look-alike for the drummer. Larry had quit school and was working while U2 was trying to score a record deal. This was why there was trouble with his and the groups schedules. But the loss of his mother would catapult him towards the band.
He has been with his partner, Ann Acheson for almost 30 years. The two met at Mount Temple, Larry's first year there. Together, they have two sons and a daughter. He is also an avid dog lover. The family has two labradors. He is very protective of his family when it comes to being in the limelite, and had done a successful job keeping his private life, just that. One strange thing though. Larry, has had tendonitus and back pain for years. He has seen many doctors for these problems, but none had the answer for the pain. Then, he saw a doctor in Germany, who practiced holistic medicine. This doctor began giving him injections of bull's blood... and it works, he says!
Larry has worked on many side projects with artist like, B.B. King, Robbie Robertson, and Emmylou Harris. He has won 22 Grammy awards and a Golden Globe. He also worked on one of the Mission Impossible soundtracks.
The drummer digs his Harley Davidsons', which he has clocked over 10,000 miles while driving from gig to gig. He loves the King...the King of rock n roll, Elvis Pressley, (for younger readers). Larry Mullen, a 15 year-old kid who posted a note on a bulletin board and made music history. Now a multi- award winning artist and critical success. I think he made the right move.

About The Fender Stratocaster Guitar

When it comes to choosing the guitar that I would use in recording, performing or just anywhere, I choose it with the utmost attention to the following details: tonal quality, wood, bridge intonation, pickups, and the shape of the guitar and its weight. I want a guitar that has a flexible tone, something that could suit the blues, rock and roll and other genre. I also want a guitar that uses alder or any middle type, not - so- heavy - not - so - light type of wood. Also I make sure that the action and the intonation is just right. However, this thing right here varies and mostly depends on the way you configure the guitar. I want a nice vintage guitar shape and look. This is the reason why I favor the Fender Stratocaster the most. And not just me, that includes the millions of Strat owners all over the world. Whether you are a pro guitar player or just an ordinary dude who plays guitar, you would love it.
It is probably the guitar which every guitar player should have. The most flexible and playable guitar in the history of the planet. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton are just three of the thousand legendary guitar players who could testify to the versatility and the satisfaction that they had when they used it. The Fender Stratocaster is perhaps the most all - rounder type of guitar. You could virtually play it with any genre that you want to. And it's not just me speaking for it, even the guitar aficionados all over the globe says so.
Anyway, let's dig in a little bit and learn its history briefly. It was supposed to be the improvement for the Telecaster. There was this one time that Leo Fender was asking its users about which factor should be improved in the Telecaster. Lots of people responded that it should have three single coil pickups; it should remodel its body to be more streamlined or sexier than usual. They wanted it to be a bit larger. However, there are some people who suggested that instead of upgrading the Telecaster, they think Leo Fender should make another guitar, with all the Telecaster improvements. Thus, the creation of the world's most popular guitar model, the Fender Stratocaster. No one would have thought that it would be that popular but up to this date, it still holds the title.
You can play it with blues music, rock and roll, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Grunge, metal, hardcore, reggae, and the list goes on and on. It is also the first guitar to have a five - way pickup selector. It enables you to have 5 pickup combination's which entitle you to more tones. This is where the flexibility and versatility happens. The three single coil pick up is also the reason for the unique and varying tonal quality which you could only find in the Fender Stratocaster. Many have imitated it but there can be only one.

Hip Hop Music and the Youth Connection

Since hip hop music is such a youthful form of music, there has always been speculation about how it affects the youth of our country. So many people write so many things and talk so much about the hip hop culture. Often, it is the negative that is highlighted; the "ill-effects" are mentioned. But it all isn't as bad as it looks. I am very impressed with motivational rapper Marcus Parker's words when he explained that rap music is about everything that happens out in the streets. It portrays the life outside one's comfort zone.
The streets are no heavens. It is the hard life; the rough life and many a times the life we are not accustomed with. Most of the artists who rise to fame come from such modest backgrounds. Many of the artists face prison-time and indulge in abuses because they aren't from the well-kept, well-educated and 'fortunate' backgrounds like all those of reading this article. Yes, it is a fact that most of the rappers still live the hard life. In fact, we can understand this from the very origin of this genre; it stemmed from ghetto and gang communities of youngsters in the troubled streets of Africa, in the 1980s. Rap lyrics have content derived from people who face these circumstances and the things that are important to them. These themes may, hence, seem inappropriate to the sophisticated mind. But when you analyze this music from the writer's point of view and the listener's perception you will understand the 'connection'.
The connection between a rapper and his fan is not just the instrumental and the rhythm; but also the experience and feeling. It is the emotion that creates the strong bond and the fan-following. When a rapper raps about sexuality, it is perhaps something that the youngster can understand. Certainly the explicit content isn't the best flavor but we must wake up to the fact that physicality is an integral part of our social being. Beside, trying to apprehend what your son or daughter appreciates will help you connect with them better. There are also songs that I like although they may not represent me as a person. I like hip hop rap songs for their beats; I may not agree with the lyric but I can certainly enjoy the music.
Further exploring the genre will introduce you to various forms of music that the industry offers. There is Jazz-rap and Conscious Hip Hop music and many other forms which will uplift the spirit and inspire far beyond. Even Underground hip-hop is finding a greater audience with platforms offered by the World Wide Web today. So, why should we be intimidated or apprehensive? Music does inspire, and when it does not; it merely entertains. Negative does not influence as strongly as the positive.
As adults, it is important to be aware of what our children are going through as well as give them the space to explore their worlds. We have all passed through that phase and grown to be who we are. In the end, a healthy upbringing will always overpower any superficial influence. Let the music play because it is only music and not an instruction for life!

Rockabilly Slap Bass Has Become An Art Form Unto Itself

Back in the days when rockabilly music was originally taking shape, country music recordings rarely featured drums. By the early 1950s some acts were beginning to use them, but they were still frowned upon by the country music elite. Because country music had such an important impact on the development of rockabilly, drums were originally left out of the rockabilly lineup at first too. Without a drummer, who was going to drive the rhythm? That chore fell to the bass player.
Along with country's influence, rockabilly grew out of blues and rhythm and blues. Blues bass players found themselves competing to be heard over the rest of the band--especially in up-tempo music like jump blues and rhythm and blues. Of course, they were all playing acoustic upright basses and didn't have amplification for them, so they started playing hard in order to be heard. Along with the more aggressive playing came the sounds of the strings snapping against the stringboard.
Players soon realized that, far from being a problem, this noise presented an opportunity. Bass players could now add a percussive element to the band simply by slapping the strings against the bass in various rhythms as they simultaneously sounded their bass notes.
Rockabilly bass players took the concept even further and developed a very aggressive, percussive string slapping style that, when accentuated with the ever-present rockabilly echo during recording, created a very distinctive sound that plays just as much a role in defining rockabilly music as the guitars do.
Elvis' early Sun Records recordings were arranged without drums at all. All of the rhythm was supplied by Bill Black slapping on the ol' "doghouse" bass fiddle. "That's All Right," "Blue Moon of Kentucky," "Mystery Train," and more great songs feature just Bill Black's slap bass, Scotty Moore's electric lead guitar, and Elvis on vocals and acoustic rhythm guitar.
It didn't take long for rockabilly cats to realize that the no-drums rule didn't apply to this new music and drums started appearing on recordings very quickly. (Even still, when Elvis appeared on the stage at the Louisiana Hayride, house drummer D.J. Fontana played along from behind a curtain at the back of the stage so as not to offend the country audience! Fontana and Elvis quickly hit it off and played together for years, with Elvis immediately letting him out from behind the curtain!)
While the addition of drums didn't put an instant stop to the slap-bass sound, eventually bands realized that they no longer needed the bass player to provide the rhythm and--seeing as how an electric bass guitar is a lot easier to carry and amplify than a bass fiddle--many players began to make the switch to electric. As the rockabilly craze died out by around 1960, so did the use of stand-up slap bass and it was all but gone from rock and roll by the early 60s.
But the rockabilly revival of the late 70s and early 80s was also a revival of the stand-up slap bass style. Most modern rockabilly bands consider this an essential element to authentic rockabilly music. And many players have greatly expanded the slap-bass style. Lee Rocker, who played bass for the Stray Cats, is a perfect example of someone who's taken the style to new heights and made it an art form all by itself.
Like the rest of rockabilly, it turns out there was a historic basis for the slap bass style that everyone now associates with the genre. Rockabilly didn't invent the style, but like it did with everything else that went into it, it did adopt it, expand it, enhance it, exploit it, and finally, own it.
