Paiste Cymbals

The Paiste family's first involvement with making cymbals began at the turn of the 20th century when Michail Toomas Paiste, an Estonian composer and musician, opened a music store in St Petersburg in 1901. This incorporated instrument manufacture and repair facilities, and ran for many years until the Russian revolution of 1917, when Michail returned to Estonia. Opening his business in Tallinn, he starts to manufacture cymbals for orchestral and marching band use, and when his son joins the family firm they start to develop cymbals more suited to drumkit players. By now they are working on turkish style cymbals as opposed to the chinese style ones they had made previously, and they also produced their first gongs. By the end of the 1930s these instruments are being exported to Europe and the USA. Just as business was beginning to build, the outset of world war II forced Michail to leave Estonia and head to Poland, where once again the business is re-established. It manages to survive the war years despite a shortage of raw materials.
At the end of the war, the Paiste family leave Poland and set up home in Northern Germany where the business is re-established for the thrid time. Business grows as the world returns to peacetime and the jazz music of America takes hold in the dance halls across the US and Europe, bringing a new demand for Paiste cymbals. Another manufacturing plant is set up in Switzerland and sons Robert and Toomas head the family firm. The Swiss factory in Nottwil becomes the centre for future Paiste business. By 2003, the company is headed by Toomas'son Erik.
Despite the initial difficulties of Paistes early years, the companies history is one of incredible innovation and foresight. Many of the cymbal models we play today were invented by Paiste.... they were the first cymbal company to designate and plan specific models in production (1930s), first company to produce more than one class of cymbal quality (1947), First to use B8 (8% Bronze) alloy for cymbal making, and they went on to invent the wavy "sound edge" hihat (1967), the first flat-ride (1968), and by the 1980s the first colour coated cymbals (colorsound series). The other big advancement in 1989 was the invention of their Signature Bronze Alloy, giving them a material with incredible sonic qualities.
Going back to the late 1950s, the company developed the Formula 602 series, made from B20 bronze, which became an instant hit with jazz drummers of the time, and the company began to experiment with B8 / CuSn8 bronze, constantly looking for new sounds. By the 1960s and the rise in popularity of amplifed rock music, loud, more cutting cymbals were being called for. Paiste used this new CuSn8 alloy to develop the "Giant Beat" series, characterized by their warm, brilliant sound and strength. Leading rock drummers of the time such as Keith Moon, John Bonham, Nick Mason and Carl Palmer quickly embraced these fantastic new cymbals. Paiste continued their research, looking at the current musical trends and the sounds and power required by drummers of that period, and by 1971 the legendary 2002 series were released, possibly the most famous cymbal line of all time. The 2002 series was used by top rock and pop drummers including John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, and Ian Paice (and indeed they are still the number one choice today for thousands of drummers such as Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante and Tico Torres). Later that decade, due to the emergence of punk rock, Paiste also developed the RUDE series, unlathed cymbals designed for maximum volume.

What To Consider When Purchasing a Guitar Amp?

Amongst the most crucial decisions any guitarist must make is what style of guitar amp he or she will use. When making a decision there tend to be a couple of elements to keep in mind.
First of all, you must acknowledge that there are a few different amplifiers. For example, the combo amp and the the amplifier head. The variances tend to be subtle but also critical. The combo amp actually is made up of the amplifier head as well as guitar audio system within an individual apparatus.
Then again, the amplifier head assortment is independent from the audio speakers in addition to linked by way of cables. Often the amplifier head chunk is positioned at the top of the audio system. Surely you also wish to keep in mind all the different types of amplifiers that exist.
To begin with, you have the acoustic amp. This amp makes the distinct clear noise involved with the traditional acoustic. It expands the wooden sound of traditional guitars. I am aware that might seem strange to read through however it's what actually happens.
Additionally you have the heavy rock guitar amp. This amp is equipped with a number of, distortion effects and distortion pedals. The noises that emits from this particular guitar amp is completely specific. It truly is potent, extreme and edgy. It is really awesome!
Last of all, the remaining amplifier that is most typical is the traditional amplifier. It's known as the following mainly because it's founded on the original amp. Also, plenty of independent musicians prefer it too.
The additional thing you need to keep in mind is the difference regarding tube amplifiers and solid state amplifiers. This is another of those key distinctions that it is important to filter for when acquiring an amplifier.
Thie tube amp is old school yet people love it. Unfortunately, it's also the costliest and most unpractical. LIkely this is due to the fact that they are unreliable, are malfunctioning with heat, are pretty heavy and are more likely to vary wildly in fee.
Additionally the solid amplifiers are the cheapest. The best part about them is that they are built with modern technology, they work via semiconductor circuits. These are usually the kinds that happen to be most commonly utilized by musicians these days.
Whatever the case, you must not forget to take some time and think about what you'd like when purchasing a guitar amplifier. The ideal one can take your playing straight to the top.

History of the World Famous Fender Guitar

The Fender 'Broadcaster', now known as the Fender Telecaster, was the first mass-produced solid body electric guitar, and the Precision Bass guitar or P-bass as it was then, was the first mass-produced electric bass guitar.
That's how important the Fender Musical Instrument Corporation are to the history of the electric guitar. Yes, others had produced electric guitars, but Fender was the first to mass-produce them and sell guitars in very large quantities. The Stratocaster is still one of the most popular instruments for today's guitarists.
Leo Fender a Southern Californian inventor, improved on the hollow body guitar that was around back in the 1940s by using an innovative and very simple solid-body electric guitar design. This also enabled him to mass-produce the instrument for a more streamline production line.
The Fender Telecaster:
In 1951 the Telecaster was born, the first solid-body mass-produced guitar.
Precision Bass Guitar:
In the same year he invented the revolutionary Precision bass guitar.
A bass guitar with frets, a very new concept and having frets meant it could be play with 'Precision' and it could be amplified which liberated bassists from the guess and play hard to hear bass guitars of the day. This really was a milestone in the history of guitars.
The World Famous Stratocaster Guitar:
Then back in 1954 Leo invented a user-friendlier model. The world famous Stratocaster guitar. A guitar that this time had three pick-ups a sleek contoured body, which made the instrument more comfortable to play. He also added a double cutaway to the design of the guitar, so the guitarist could access the upper registers of the instrument.
Leo still felt there was something missing for his new Stratocaster design. The country bands liked the pedal steel guitars, so Leo decided to add a tremolo arm to enable the musician to bend the strings and achieve a pedal steel type sound that was so popular among the country and western folks.
Sale to CBS:
Due to poor health Leo Fender sold the company to CBS in 1965. The Columbia Broadcasting System, bought out Fender for a cool $13 million, almost two million more then they paid for the New York Yankees a year before. After selling the Fender company, Leo Fender founded Music Man in 1975, and later founded the G&L Musical Instruments company, which manufactures electric guitars and basses based on his later designs.
The sale unfortunately led to a reduction in the quality of Fender's guitars due to "cost-cutting" from the CBS management team. Several cosmetic changes occurred after 1965/1966, such as a larger headstock shape on certain guitars. A bolder black headstock logo, as well as a brushed aluminium face plate with blue or red labels depending the model of the guitar. Bound necks with block shaped position markers were introduced in 1966.

Since When Is the Saxophone Not a Rock and Roll Instrument?

Thank you for proving that the saxophone is a rock and roll instrument! This a comment I received recently after someone watched one of my sax videos. Two friends were arguing whether the sax was even considered to be a valid instrument in rock and roll.
For me, this is such a preposterous question to even ask but then when I think about the state of today's commercial music, radio, video etc it really is a valid one.
By now I suppose there are many, many young people who would not even consider that the sax belongs or even has a place in any type of modern rock-based commercial music... mostly because it doesn't!
This was true to some extent even when I discovered the great tone of the saxophone in rock and roll back in the early 70's. Sure, you'd hear it in some mainstream groups like Springsteen's, Supertramp, and Billy Joel to name just a few but the list doesn't get too long.
If you were like me, a big fan of rock-based music you had to do some digging for yourself because the mainstream broadcasters weren't going to let you hear any of that.
Interestingly enough, the further back I dug the more I found. Meaning that the further back you go the more sax was used on rock and roll music. In fact, when rock and roll started sax was king. Not many groups went without one and many had more than one sax in the line-up.
When most people hear someone talk about the beginning of rock and roll they immediately think about the mid 50's with Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis and on from there. The truth is that by that time rock and roll was almost 10 years old.
The late 40's had some wild blues based R & B music that was so new and crazy sounding people started calling it rock and roll, not the media though, just people in the music business like musicians, producers and some in-the-know fans. Musicians were singing about rock and roll too, it's meaning being of the sexual nature.
Anyway, the sax sound that was being produced by some of these young up-and-coming players not only fit into this new sound but was a big part of it. One of the early wild screamers on the sax was Illinois Jacquet, who as part of Lionel Hampton's group recorder a live solo way back in May of 1942. That sax solo is considered to be the first recorded solo that inspired the players who would come up through the 40's and be part of the new music that would be called rock and roll. Illinois Jacquet was 19 years old at the time.
The recording was "Flying Home" and it signified the end of the big band swing era and the beginning of the wild R & B era which would turn into rock and roll by the end of the 40's.
Fast forward to the late 40's, that's when rock and roll started to be. It evolved over the next few years and became so popular that eventually hit mainstream in the mid 50's. It's around this time that the guitar overshadowed the sax in these groups because guitar became a big part of the rhythm and eventually started taking over the solo's too.
This was just a natural progression which was dictated by the music. The sax never left completely and other elements came in like the piano and so it continues.
The saxophone, with it's unique sound capabilities to go from the mellowest tone to the wildest screaming instrument makes it one of the most versatile instruments we have.
