Home Karaoke - Are MP3 Machines Better Than Using CDGs?

Home Karaoke Machines are fun and easy to use. They can provide hours of wholesome entertainment for the entire family. And are great for any type of party or event. In the past you were limited to the types of home karaoke systems you could purchase. But right now you have two main choices to what type of Karaoke Machine you want to have. Either a MP3 Machine or a CDG Machine. Of course there are other types of karaoke machines available, but these two are the most popular choices amongst home karaoke users.
The distinction between the two types is obvious. A MP3 Machine is capable of playing digital files in the format of a MP3. While a CDG Machine requires physical discs with a number of prerecorded songs. CDG stands for Compact Discs plus Graphics. They are just like regular CDs but have a graphics attached to them for displaying the lyrics of a song. They are a few Karaoke Machines out there that are capably of playing both types of media. Which is great news for those who want to be able to play both types.
CDG Karaoke Machines:
CDG Machines have been around for a long time. This does not mean they are out of date technology. While we do live in a digital age, it is still nice to physically have a library of songs that are readily available to pop into your machine whenever you like. Digital files can often get lost or deleted and you have to purchase them all over again.
Displaying lyrics on a TV screen is the big advantage that CDGs has over your MP3 files. Simple playing a MP3 file without any graphics or lyrics is still great, but you lose a major feature of Karaoke. Not everyone knows the lyrics to every song, so having the lyrics displayed means everyone can take part. The big disadvantage of CDGs are their limited storage space and navigation. Most CDG discs only have about 10 to 12 songs on each disc. You may find yourself constantly inserting discs to find songs.
MP3 Karaoke Machines:
MP3 Machines carry with it a level of convenience that you just do not get with CDG Machines. You can insert your iPod or mp3 player and select your favorite songs by just pressing a few buttons. Your friends can bring their iPods or mp3 players and suddenly your music selection has drastically increased. Also, your playlist is not limited to just 10 or 12 songs, you can create a playlist as long as you want.
Of course MP3s files alone do not display lyrics. For this you will need to have a MP3+Graphic file. You can find these types of files now on many Karaoke downloading sites. They are basically an audio file (mp3) plus a graphics file that you play at the same time. Just make sure your Karaoke Machine is capable of playing MP3+Graphic (MP3+G) files before you download any. Not being able to eliminate lead vocals is another disadvantage you may come across with playing regular MP3 files. A song on a CDG disc is usually recorded with two different tracks, one for the music and the other for the lead vocals. Which makes it easy to remove the lead vocals when playing the song. Playing regular MP3 files does not give you this option.
Which Type Is Best?
Both CDG and MP3 Karaoke Machines have their good points and bad points. Only you can decide which will best suit your karaoke needs. MP3 Machines are definitely more modern and offers better functionality. And is probably the better choice between the two types. But the classic CDG Machine is still around for a reason. It will provide you with all your basic karaoke needs, including displaying lyrics. The ideal machine is one that is capably of playing both types of media. This way you get the best of both worlds.

Getting the Right Band for Your Event

Music is critical to any good party. Having a live band at your party can give it a whole new atmosphere. If you decide to hire a band there is a process you should go through. It takes time to select the right band for any function and you should do some groundwork before rushing out and hiring your little brother's garage band to play your Christmas party.
Firstly when is your event? Most decent bands book out at least a month in advance. You should try to plan the band one to three months ahead. As soon as you select a date and a venue the band should be the next thing on your list.
The second thing you should confirm is the venue allows live music. Some venues have noise limitations. If located in a residential area many venues are required to keep the music to a minimum on week nights or shut down by a certain time. Also check the space where a band would play. How many musicians are able to comfortably perform? Does the venue have a sound system? You should know the restrictions before sourcing a band.
Thirdly decide on the type of party you want. If the event is a black tie sit down dinner a thrash metal band may not fit the mood. The band and the music should be complimentary. Ask friends if they know any good bands or if they used a band at their parties or wedding. Check the paper and the internet. Most bands will advertise.
If you find a band ask to come see them play. Most bands will either organize to play a short set for you or they will arrange for you to see them perform at another event. You should know what you are getting for your money. Take note of the music they play and there interaction with the crowd. Did they play to right music to keep the crowd entertained?
Talk to the band. Tell them what you want. Make a list of the songs you like and compare it with their playlist. Ask them if they know your favorite songs. If there is a special song you want for the event ask them to save it to a special moment. Find out if they will provide the music for break times. If you require the band to dress a certain way be sure to ask them if this is ok. You want the band to add to the atmosphere. If the event is formal ask if the band will wear suits. Be sure to ask as many questions as possible before you decide.
Lastly, make up a contract. This may sound like over kill but if you want to ensure everything runs smoothly it is a good idea to have the details in writing. Agree on a time the band will arrive. Make sure you include time to set up before the guests arrive. You do not want the band doing sound check while your guests stand around waiting for the party to start. Include the dates, venue, price, number of musicians, transport, how many hours the band will play, how many breaks and the duration of breaks, equipment, clothing, food and drinks.

Why the Piano Is Special As an Instrument

The piano is considered a polyphonic instrument. "Polyphonic" means "producing multiple sounds at the same time". It also belongs to several musical groups of instruments. It is, of course, a keyboard instrument. However, it is also considered a percussion instrument because when one presses the keys, hammers strike the strings to produce sound. Thus, it is also considered a string instrument. Every one of these classifications is correct. The piano is truly an extraordinary instrument with several aspects that make it rather special.
One uniqueness of the piano is that it is actually used to teach harmony to students, an area known as "keyboard harmony". This is the knowledge of chords and their progression. Harmony is a core part of music theory. It is comparable to knowing grammar to becoming proficient in English; it is the basic structure of music. To understand it, one is taught harmony in music theory, but since music is also an applied subject, it must be taught practically as well. Since the piano possess 88 keys, it makes it suitable for this purpose.
Just about every school of music actually has mandatory piano proficiency courses for all instrumentalists and singers. These are usually a two year minimum curriculum. Pianists, interestingly, however, are not required to learn other instruments. Even on an amateur level, most people, especially children, who wish to learn a certain musical instrument often start with piano, believe it or not, as a foundational step. Good music instructors will usually recommend this, by the way.
Though it is mostly a solo instrument, the piano is considered the most ideal instrument for accompaniment. Almost every classical and jazz singer and instrumentalist is usually accompanied by a pianist. In fact, the piano, by itself, can substitute for an entire orchestra for a musician rehearsing a concerto.
Playing piano requires a great deal of coordination. Thus, in learning it, one's sense of coordination is greatly improved. For one thing, each hand actually works independently, accomplishing a different task from the other. All ten fingers are constantly being used. Notes feature a set of two staffs, one for each hand, called a "grand staff". The player has to read both at the same time and coordinate what is written to the keyboard, meanwhile hearing it and ensuring it is being done properly. Technically speaking, a pianist has to coordinate his/her eyes, hands, fingers, ears and feet (for pedaling) simultaneously.
Learning piano is, of course, possible for just about every person, no matter what age. However, in order to become an accomplished concert pianist, it is recommended to start cultivating this skill from an early age, preferably childhood. To become even accepted into a higher education school of music, one must be a relatively accomplished performer. For this reason, parents of talented children, in any of the arts, must be alert to this and encourage and cultivate their child's penchant as much as possible, consulting the child's willingness at all times, of course. Usually, talents in aesthetics surface during early and formative years, so should be fostered accordingly.
There is more to it as well. Pediatric research has even determined that learning piano at an early age helps develop motor skills, betters memory, improves academics and even self esteem. In adults, tests have shown that pianists are far less likely to suffer Alzheimer's disease, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.
Because of the range of technical factors associated with piano, self-teaching is not recommended. One misses out on the real benefits. Just as one doesn't learn by themselves to become a medical doctor, one shouldn't self-teach on learning such a complex and powerful instrument.
The piano, as you can see, is a rather special instrument. It possesses a velvety sound, is elegant and can be thunderously powerful or delicately subtle. It is a joy to learn and to play and is one of the best investments one can make for their own personal growth and enrichment.
