Songs About Growing Up For Pop Music Fans

There are many songs about growing up these days, so selecting a handful is no easy task. Whether you are working on a presentation, trying to choose a song for graduation, or simply want a song to help you through times of change, you may find this list helpful. It is a list of pop songs that cover many 'growing up' issues. From coming to the end of a chapter in your life and starting another, to having a wish-list for when you grow up, and everything in between, it is all here.
  1. Pop - Britney Spears - I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman - As the title suggests, the lyrics talk about this transition from girlhood to womanhood.
  2. Pop Punk - The Maine - Growing Up - This song reminisces about being young, but also questions "what will we do now, after graduation?". It is full of positive messages such as 'we're in this together', but it really drives the point that 'Growing Up Won't Bring Us Down'.
  3. Pop - Taylor Swift - Never Grow Up - This song tells the story of a girl's life. When she is 14, she can't wait to grow up, get a place of her own, be in charge of her own life. Then she has grown up and is living in her own apartment in the city. She misses her childhood and wished she hadn't grown up.
  4. Pop - Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up - Every kid has their own list of wishes for when they grow up. This is one such list. It includes things like wanting to see the world and wanting to be famous.
  5. Alternative - Imogen Heap - Speeding Cars - This song was featured in the Graduation episode of the OC. To me, this seemed a great choice. The song can be interpreted as leaving a part of your life while you enter another. As well, Imogen's voice is one of a kind.
  6. Rock - J Minus - Time To Grow Up - This is quite a sad, pessimistic song. The singer feels life is just not what it was portrayed to him and his dreams are starting to rust.
  7. Pop - Vitamin C- Graduation (Friends For Ever) - No list of pop songs about growing up would be complete without Vitamin C. The lyrics are perfect for finishing a chapter in life and moving on to another

Do You Want A Career In Music?

Career In Music?
There is one very basic thing about pursuing a career in music in the 21st century. That is you must have a sufficient passion.
The passion that is needed to keep you motivated and working through thick and thin is considerable.
The profession of a musician is a tough one and one that takes an awful lot of work and dedication to attain.
Things To Consider
One of the first things you need to ask yourself is whether or not you can envision a life for yourself where you enjoy music both as a listener and as a participant but not have to make a living at it.
In other words in the true sense of the word could you be happy being an amateur? If you don't feel that you absolutely have to be a practicing musician in order to fulfill yourself then you are far better off enjoying your music as amateur and finding another profession which will please you and satisfy your needs and desires.
If The Passion Is There
When you have decided that your passion is so great that you must indulge it and become a musician then you have to realize that you will be working very hard for several years before reaching the level of professionalism. After that not only must you have the talent but also you will have to have a bit of luck as well.
Supply
When you consider how many instrumentalists are graduating from conservatories worldwide every year and how few jobs there are available you then begin to realize the competition that you face if you are going to play an instrument. Most instrumentalists play in an orchestra. Most orchestral players stay in their positions for around 30 to 40 years. So the turnover is very limited particularly when contrasted with the number of qualified musicians that graduate each year.
If you are going to be a singer then the competition gets even greater. Try to list for yourself how many full time singing positions there are in the world in the area you desire to work. Contrast that with the number of great singers who are out there looking for work.
The Positive Side
However, on the positive side of all this is that being a musician is the greatest profession imaginable and if you really have the passion and talent to drive you, there is no life you can have that would be better.
Conclusion
So, it is up to you, isn't it? The important thing is to pursue your career with intelligence, discipline, plan and passion and be ready to learn to cope with the arduous world of the professional musician.
I look forward to hearing you perform.

Listing The Beatles Albums In Order Of My Preference

As anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of pop history will know, The Beatles released 13 albums during their time together as recording artists, on the EMI Parlophone label in the UK and on their own Apple label, towards the end of their career.
Most people might even be able to list each of these releases in chronological order, such was the pervasive influence of the group on western culture in the 1960s and beyond.
As a lifelong fan, a question I am often asked is What Is Your Favourite Beatles Album? This is akin to being asked, as a parent with three children, Which is your favourite child? Its an almost impossible question to answer, and I find the only acceptable way to approach this conundrum is to try and list a few of the Beatles albums in order of my preference. Performing this exercise at different points over the last thirty odd years would undoubtedly have thrown up differing results, so here goes for 2011 and we'll revisit the question sometime in the next couple of years!
  • A Hard Days Night: released 10 July 1964. The first Beatles album to contain exclusively self penned material. All fourteen songs attributed to Lennon/McCartney, their style and execution epitomised the exuberance and joy of youth. Lennon in particular hit a purple patch at this time, with the title track and others such as Any Time At All, I'll Cry Instead and I'll Be Back all from him. Sheer fun.
  • Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: released 1 June 1967. A sprawling masterpiece, rated at number one in Rolling Stone magazines 500 greatest albums of all time, it took over 700 hours of recording time and saw The Beatles basic sound augmented like never before. Its finale, A Day In The Life, was considered by some a vision of Armageddon.
  • Revolver: released 5 August 1966. Placed at number three in Rolling Stone Magazines 500 greatest albums of all time, a monumental achievement and anecdotally regarded as the bands best album. With mind shuddering songs such as Eleanor Rigby, Got To Get You Into My Life and Tomorrow Never Knows, its grandeur and ambition has rarely been matched.
  • The Beatles (The White Album): released 22 November 1968. A sprawling mish mash of songs, mostly composed during their three month stint in India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, earlier that year. It is notable for its diversity and stark in its portrayal of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership as, effectively, at an end. Given a lukewarm reception critically on release (by their standards), opinions on it are now much more positive, to the extent that Rolling Stone listed it as the tenth greatest album of all time.
If you are a fan of The Beatles, then you may like to check out a UK artist with a similar, musical style: James Henry. He has a wonderful single out soon, entitled Dont Let It Happen; you can download a previous song of his, Saturday Morning, for free by clicking the link below.

Rockabilly Has Become A Universal Language For Fans of Rock And Roll

In the beginning, rockabilly was a uniquely American phenomenon. Having grown out of the roots of various American music forms including the blues, country, gospel, and rhythm and blues, it was American music through and through. But it didn't take long before the language of rockabilly transcended borders and spoken-language barriers. It quickly became part of the universal language of rock and roll music.
When rockabilly exploded on the popular-music scene with the arrival of Elvis in 1954 it spread across America like wildfire through a field of dry grass. The music started deep in the south but quickly broke out of the small local southern markets to gain regional and then national significance.
Soon musicians from all over America where joining in to make rockabilly music and fans from all over American were loving it. It was only a matter of time then, as the music began to sell in the American market, that promoters would begin trying to break it in other markets as well.
Before long, the kids in England and Australia were also singing the language of rock and roll and they began to love the original American artists even more than the American fans did. Several of the early rockabilly pioneers found eager fans in foreign markets who couldn't get enough of the music. This was a career saver for many of these artists who'd been all but forgotten at home in the states.
Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many other artists found great success in both record sales and live concert appearances in the UK including Australia. This success often revitalized flagging careers and gave the artists new energy to continue creating.
Today, rockabilly music ties fans from all over the world together like never before. Their love for rockabilly music gives them a common bond that strengthens the rockabilly scene even more. Fans who may not speak the same verbal language can nonetheless communicate via rockabilly.
Rockabilly festivals, conventions, parties, and other events draw attendance not only from the local crowd, but from throughout the world. Fans who don't know anything else about one another at least know they share their love of rockabilly and that's enough to bind them together as life-long friends.
When the original rockabilly cats were making their music, they couldn't have known what an impact they were to have on the world. They could never have predicted that their simple, straight-forward songs would become a universal language spoken by devout fans throughout the world 55 or 60 years after they'd made the music. And yet, that's exactly what's happened. Fans throughout the world use the Internet to communicate with other fans, follow their favorite bands from across the globe, and share music and their love for it. In this way, rockabilly music truly has become a universal language.

Choosing Your Weapon - A Basic Guide To Choosing The Right Guitar

Beginner and intermediate guitarists usually start learning guitar with a low end model and will at some point look to upgrade their guitar. The main reasons for this are: (1) To play a guitar that feels nicer to play. (2) The need to feel inspired by a new and better guitar. (3) To play a guitar closer to the sound they want - as their ability increases, so does a guitarist's ear for the sound they want to hear. (4) To gain credibility with other guitarists.
Choosing a guitar is as much about the sound you like as it is about how pleasing the guitar looks and feels. Guitars are not just for playing. They are admired and displayed as pieces of art. They have a beautiful shape and some say each one has its own personality. Here are some tips to help the aspiring guitarist to choose a new guitar to take them to a new level.
* Spend some time researching the guitars used by some of your favourite players. It's usually a good indication of the sound that you most want to play yourself. Think of the styles of music you like playing and listening to. Usually a style of music uses a specific type of guitar. If you're a Metal player then a Gibson, Ibanez or an ESP will be right up your alley. If you are a Country player you'll probably be right at home with a Fender Telecaster. Even though these examples are a pretty safe generalisation, my advice is to always do your own research and satisfy yourself.
* Browse local and internet stores for various styles of electric guitars. Guitars are works of art and you will want something that you love to look at just as much as you love to play it. The more you love it the more you will pick it up. The more you pick it up the more likely you will be to play it and improve your playing.
* Quality is generally better with established well-known brands. That said, you can find great guitars from lesser known brands if you know what you're looking for and if you get the right information. I love going and talking to my local guitar repairer or luthier. They keep up to date on which factory is pumping out various brands, who owns who, what technology is being used in the manufacture and build quality of various guitars and the specifications of a wide range of guitars. Go and make friends with your luthier!
* Tone is everything. Make sure you play your guitar through a nice amp. The last thing you want is an awesome guitar that sounds lack lustre because the amp you're playing it through is awful. Find a good amp to try out your guitar choices through and stick with it so you can get an idea of the difference in quality between different guitars. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few guitars, then it is a good time for you to try those guitars through some different amps to find your ultimate combination. Although this will take a while, it will be worth it - you have to listen to it every time you play.
Above all, go with your gut. You're the only one you have to please. If you take your time and follow your instincts you should be on your new guitar and loving it in no time.

Let's Buy An Acoustic Bass Guitar!

Are you familiar with acoustic bass guitars? You should be. They can give a song a wonderful sound and bass players who try them love them.
What's the difference between an acoustic bass guitar and a typical acoustic guitar? On the surface they may seem almost identical (except for the strings) and they will sound similar. Looking closer, you will start to see some major differences. An acoustic bass is shaped differently. It has a larger hollow body and a much fuller neck. The fingerboard is wider has 20 frets opposed to the 19 frets an acoustic guitar will have. Usually, a bass guitar has only 4 strings though there are different versions, such as the 6 string acoustic guitar and the Mexican 12 string acoustic bass, also known as bajo sexto.
The four string bass is tuned identically to the double bass. This tuning, when compared with a 6-string guitar, will be octave lower than the lowest 4 strings, specifically E, A, D, and G. As 5 string bass will go up one more scale, and a 6 string will go up 2.
A key element to consider when you are playing a bass, whether it is acoustic or electric, is the type of strings. The most common strings are metal, and metal strings may can be found in roundwound, flatwound, groundwound, or halfwound types. However, a lot of acoustic bass players like nylon strings for a softer sound. Different coverings such as plastic or tapewound may also be used, but it pays to try out different string types when you can. You may be surprised by the tones you can achieve. Often it can be difficult to hear the notes being performed on an acoustic bass guitar. Despite a wider, deeper sound hollow I the body, the low pitch of the strings will reduce the overall volume. You will see acoustic bass player rig up their guitar with pickups so they can be plugged into an amplifier and heard over the other instruments.
Because bass guitars are not as common and popular as 6 string guitars you will need to do a little research before buying. Reviews on Amazon are a good source (they are reviews by buyers) and of the more popular blogs have good insights. It pays to look at some of the better music stores for information as well. While they are going to try to sell you a bass, they will have a lot of knowledge as to which manufacturer makes the best guitar for your needs. You should also check out the websites of some of the manufacturers. The information will obviously be slanted towards their products, but you should find a lot of useful details to help you choose the right bass. Because acoustic basses are more of a specialty item you should be able to narrow down your search quite quickly. As a last research suggestion, I would highly recommend finding a forum that specializes in acoustic basses and sign up. Bass players with a lot of experience will be posting ideas and suggestions that you can use.
Learning to play an acoustic bass is very different than playing a guitar. The fingering is different, the picking is different and the tabs are different. On the other hand, if you already play the guitar you will have an idea about the correct way to hold your bass and understand the keys and notes that come with each fret. Don't forget-the bass player is the engine that drives the band!
Bass players tend to be in the background but they are the driving force for a songs rhythm. An acoustic bass will give you a more mellow sound but the concept is the same as an electric or upright bass. Lay down a rhythm, drive the song, fill the gaps and make the music sing.
